Chapter Fourteen, Appa's Lost Day

"Where's Katara?"

Appa padded over to Katara who was sitting at the table eating breakfast. She rubbed his head.

"What a good boy," she said.

Yes, she was right, Appa was a good boy. He wagged his tail as he waited.

"Where's Aang?" Katara asked, putting her hands in the air exaggerating the question.

Appa knew that she was going to ask that and was already turning around to wander over to Aang who was sitting on the couch eating a bowl of cereal.

"Good boy Appa! Very good boy!" Aang said, and scratched under Appa's ears when Appa finally sat down in front of Aang.

Yes, Aang was right, Appa was a very good boy. He opened his mouth to smile, some people don't realise that dogs can smile but they do it all the time.

This was Appa's favourite game. It was very fun, and it seemed to make his humans very excited and happy.

"Okay... Where's- Hang on a second," But he cut himself off as Appa had already turned around halfway.

Aang grinned. "You have to wait for me to say it... okay... where's Sokka?! Go find him!!" Aang said, saying the last part quickly and high-pitched.

Appa knew that was what Aang was about to say and he made his way quickly over to the shut door that led to Sokka's room. Appa sat down in front of it and whacked it with his paw before looking at Aang. Sokka was in this room.

"Go away," came Sokka's mumbled reply.

But this only confirmed it for Appa, he whacked Sokka's door with his paw again. He looked at Aang and wagged his tail. For some reason this made his humans laugh.

"Appa's looking for you Sokka!" Katara called.

"It's too damn early for hide and seek, leave me alone" Sokka shouted back.

Anng and Katara chuckled. Appa decided that the game was over now and he padded over to Aangs feet and lay down, resting his big heavy head on Aang's feet. He knew what was coming and he didn't like it, not one bit. He let out a great big sigh.

Aang leaned down and cupped Appa's face in his hands. He gently squished Appa's face.

"What are you sighing about buddy? Does the world rest on your shoulders?" he asked.

The whole world did rest on Appa's shoulders, very good of Aang to notice.

There were many things Appa had to worry about. He had to make sure that all his humans were walked at least twice a day, he had to make sure he helped them to clean, especially around the kitchen table whenever it was meal time. He had to make sure he defended the house from intruders or robbers, or even worse, those bastard "mail-men". Appa didn't trust the mailmen, humans, why did they carry boxes? What were in the boxes? Bombs? Drugs? Flea treatment? For the love of God, what was in those boxes!?

But no, that wasn't why Appa was sighing miserably. He was sighing because he knew that soon his humans would all be going to "University". Appa didn't know what it was and he didn't understand why it meant his humans were gone all day. Appa was sure that if ever met this "University" he give them a talking to, with some strongly worded barks.

And then the dreaded thing happened, Aang left. No matter how hard Appa tried, he could never convince him to stay, no amount of whining, moping or sighing would change Aang's mind.
