Chapter Nine, "Love Shack!"
Zuko had a new observation about his friends, they were very persuasive.
Zuko was squished in beside Aang and Toph in Sokka's car, pillows and bags sat on their laps and on the floor. Sokka was driving of course and Katara was in the passenger seat. They had been driving for almost four hours now.
Zuko didn't heaps like being squished in but at least he didn't have it as bad as Appa, Appa was lying on the floor between Sokka's seat and Katara's. He had a special leash clipped to his collar that worked like a seatbelt but for a dog. He could sit up if he wanted to but he couldn't walk all around the car so he mostly just lay there napping.
Zuko thought it was nice that they were bringing Appa. They hadn't brought Momo though, Momo didn't like the beach apparently. Suki wasn't able to come with them so she had agreed to babysit the cat while they were gone.
Earlier, Toph had been in the passenger seat and Katara was in the middle seat, they switched when they got halfway to their destination.
Zuko had noticed something else, when Katara had been sitting in the middle seat, she had fallen asleep. And because she was in the middle seat her head fell onto Aang's shoulder. Aang must have been using his monk muscle training because he stayed as still as a statue for a good forty-five minutes until she woke up again.
What was Zuko thinking about? Oh right! How persuasive his friends were. Did he really just call them "His" friends? How long had he known them for now? A couple of months in and he was already thinking of them as "His" friends. Could he really call them that?
Zuko pulled his gaze away from the window and glanced to his left where Aang and Toph were sitting, they were heatedly discussing a book he didn't know, something about wild cats that lived in clans. Zuko then looked to the front where Katara was sitting, she was looking at a map on her phone and telling Sokka directions, Sokka was ignoring Katara's directions as he drove through an intersection and navigated the small town's sleepy traffic.
Zuko's eyes flicked to the rearview mirror to where he could see Sokka's bright blue eyes focused on the road. He had nice eyes, they were lovely to look at, like two deep pools filled with rainwater or maybe like blue nebulas from the depths of space. Sokka's eyes flicked up into the rearview mirror so he could look behind him before he made a turn, he caught Zuko's gaze and Zuko went back to staring out the window.
Anyway, the reason Zuko was squished in Sokka's car with bags and luggage was because Aang and the gang or the g-Aang as you could call it, Aang and the gang had managed to talk Zuko into coming on holiday with them. It was their mid-semester break and they had two weeks off so naturally they wanted to get away from the city.
Katara and Sokka apparently had a beach house in Chameleon Bay they could stay at, or they said that their father had a beach house there that they could stay at. Zuko didn't know much about the Watertribe sibling's dad, he was pretty sure he was rich if he owned a beach house in Chameleon Bay. He also was pretty sure he was a widowed man because whenever Katara or Sokka referred to their mum they used past tense.
Zuko didn't know if their mother was dead for certain, but even so, he felt a small sort of kindness with Katara and Sokka at the thought of it, although he didn't tell them. He too, didn't have a mother who was alive. Well, maybe he did. Again, he wasn't sure if his own mum was alive or not. She disappeared when he and his sister were little. Zuko had been eleven and his little sister had been only nine. It happened recently after Lu Ten's death. Safe to say it had felt like another sucker punch to the gut.
