I crept around the hill by moving behind big boulders that hid the path from the plain we had moved across. I froze lurking behind the rock when I heard a yawn. There's someone there! I thought trying to look through a gap between this rock and the one I heard the yawn from. I couldn't see anything.
The one on watch is probably not looking for anyone coming from this side as it is rough terrain and these rocks would be next to impossible to climb for someone without my kind of skills. I shifted slightly using my claws to keep me attached to the rock so I didn't rustle the thick undergrowth on this side of the rocks.
"Are you asleep on watch again?" I followed the steps with my ears as they came up to the man on the other side of the rock from me.
"Nope, just board." Another voice replied.
"Well don't be! You know what the boss will do if he catches you napping again."
The footsteps moved away and I breathed out quietly. I'm glad this guy is more or less asleep, or he could have seen me creep up. There again I didn't see him. So does that mean he isn't looking or he is lying in wait?
Moving as quietly as I could I climbed up the rock so I could see the man behind it. I watched the man supposedly on watch. He stood leaning back on the rock that had hidden me and watched the activity of the place I had come to see. I could see why he was hidden from me now as he was in a small alcove carved in the rock.
If he wanted to be able to see people approaching he should stand more out in the open. Then again I would have seen him from the road in. The smoke gives them away but he hides, why would they hide him there if they don't hide they are here? This feels more like they are not bandits.
Partly morphing more to protect my arms, I climbed up the rock more and got a good look at the place. It was a hive of activity. People pushed mine carts out of the hole in the rocky wall while others walked fresh carts back in. A lot of people walked towards the large tent where the smell of food came from.
They looked dirty. They had lanterns dangling from the ends of the pickaxes they carried. It was obvious that they had just finished their shift in the mine. The smell from the tent made my mouth water reminding my gut that I had skipped the dried offerings from Kyros.
I saw the men sorting the rocks that came from the mine. Some were put in large crates while others were thrown into a pile to one side of the mine's opening. I smiled as the rocks they threw away sang to my ears with the hidden prize inside.
Bandits wouldn't set up a mine. I can fetch Kyros and Reina. We could have full bellies and I may even get my hands on those rocks. My hoard would grow fast.
I watched a man walk back up this way and stop next to the unobservant man
"Seen anything?"
"A whole lot of nothing." The man from the alcove replied.
