My mother didn't have time to do anything more than get close to us before Kyanite scooped her up and took off. He held me so gently into his chest in one arm as we sailed through the air. I looked over at my mother and saw she had her eyes squeezed shut. She also had an iron grip on Kyanite's thumb. Her legs dangled like mine did from his hand, but I knew he had me. "Relax mum he won't let you fall."
"I hate heights!" She cried.
Both me and Kyanite laughed at that as we left the horror of that underground den. After a few miles, I saw a group of waggons. Kyanite was watching them intently as we got closer.
His intense expression stopped me from engaging him in conversation. I looked below me as we started our slow spiral down. There I saw all the wagons and people gathered together watching us descend. I could see now that we were closer that it was our group.
My waggon was off to one side and I felt more than a little relieved seeing it sitting on its wheels.
Everyone cheered as Kyanite's feet touched the ground. He set my mother on her feet, she was wobbling so Kyanite used his free hand to support her. To my surprise Kyanite didn't let me down, instead he morphed whilst holding me. "We have lost time and ground. Do you think we can push hard enough to catch up?"
Tiger nodded and shouted. "Get it together! Dragon I think you should look after Rat for now."
Kyanite nodded turning to our waggon.
Hawk stood nearby. "I will go back and tell Bear."
"Yes. Thank you Hawk I owe you a lot."
Hawk laughed. "No Dragon. I think now all the yaspilrmeth owe you. Without you, we would still be hunted instead of planning and coming together." She flapped and took off.
Kyanite climbed into the waggon. The place looked tidy and smelt of vinegar. "They cleaned it."
Kyanite nodded laying me down on the bed. He lifted my shirt and smiled. "Swallow did a good job at protecting you from the waggon falling over."
"She did? Is she alright?"
At that moment Swallow climbed in the waggon and it started to move off. "I'm fine Rat just a little bruised."
Kyanite lay on the bed next to me and sighed. I looked around at him and he draped his arm across me. "Are you alright?" I asked him softly.
He nodded and gripped me a little tighter. He usually wants to fondle his hoard but he's holding me. He said he sees me as his hoard. I suppose that is what I am until we finish whatever this ceremony is. I don't like the idea of being seen that way but.... he is so protective.
He put his head on my shoulder and sighed. I chuckled making him look up at me, his amber eyes catching the light making them shine. "You finally found a gem more precious than every coin in your hoard huh?"
