Sniffing the air that wafted up from the tunnel on the breeze, brought the scent of Bear. He smelled angry and tired. It brought something more.... humans and the scent of wet ash. No point waking Dragon with this. They aren't in the cave or tunnel yet and Bear will be here... in a few hours. He is really angry.
I looked out of the cave at the barren landscape around this side of the mountain. The tip of the mountain was glowing with its snowy peak and I wondered if Dragon could take me to it. Looking back over at Dragon laying on his glowing rocks. They flickered brighter for a moment before going back to their soft glow of before.
I hope Dragon can take us beyond these mountains. I've heard many things about them, and... none of them are good. Bandits and bogs so deep you just disappear, never to be seen again. These mountains and the space between them are perilous to anyone who isn't careful. I hope Bear and Dragon know this landscape better than I do.
Running... I hate running for my life. The wind changed direction and brought the smell of fire and the unmistakable roar of a dragon breathing fire into the world. That sound never fails to make the skin of every creature in the world crawl. Dragons are the only beast that cares more for things than they do for their survival.
I shook my head as I bounded as fast as I could away from the sound. Letting it put fear into me, I ran faster. I can't believe Dragon could have been that foolish! He's always been a hot head but...
My mind slipped back into the past when a young brown bear met Dragon. A man stood tall in the light of the sun. "Who are you?" I asked as I climbed down from the tree.
"Dragon. You must be Bear."
I nodded wiping apple juice off my nose with my big paws. "I'm going to grow up to be the biggest brown Bear in the world."
He smiled. "Of course you are."
The echoes of the past rushed through my brain. He was already fully grown when I met him. I've never met another Dragon. I have met many other beasts but never another Dragon. I have always wondered if he was the last.
