That night, Anya lay excitedly in her bed. So far, her first school trip had been nothing short of exciting. "Can you believe this is only part one of our amazing journey?" she squealed to Becky, who had been assigned the same room as her. "That's great Anya" she yawned, "but can I please get some sleep?"
As Becky turned to the side and pulled the covers over her face, Anya eagerly sat by the window. A full moon lit the wide horizon, one full of endless wonders and possibilities.
Meanwhile, Yor was with the S.P.A.R.R.O.W. agents, preparing to travel to their next location. It was crucial that they departed that evening as the schools were scheduled to first thing in the morning. While their endeavor that day was successful, Agent Crow still remained stoic. His composure made even The Thorn Princess rather uneasy at times, but she still wanted to chat, she felt rather lonely without Anya or Loid accompanying her. "So, quite the successful mission today, right?" Crow barely had much to say, while he didn't admit it, he could have done it all on his own, and preferred it stayed that way.
Mother Goose on the other hand, appreciated Yor's help so far, "Indeed, thanks to Agent Thorn, we located the bomb before activation." but Agent Crow silently walked away to gather his equipment. "What's his problem?" quizzed Yor, "he's been kinda..." pausing to come up with an accurate enough word, "prickly since I signed on."
Mother Goose sighed, "Agent Crow is our top ranking spy, he isn't always in favor of having a fellow agent on the field with him. He claims that it makes him lose focus." Yor was used to having to do assassin work on her own, but couldn't bear the thought of having to do everything all by herself, the other assassins in The Garden appreciated and respected each other deeply. "I haven't been weighing him down, have I? I did make a wrong turn down the canal during our mission today. Probably cost us valuable time." Mother Goose dropped her serious demeanor to smile reassuringly at Yor, "Nonsense, your rapid paddling was what led us to the two terrorist members in the first place. Without you, things would have gone from bad to worse."
Yor still felt unsure, "I know being a spy isn't my thing, but I have to do this, Anya's counting on me, the whole world is." She sighed as she looked up at the night sky, "Not sure if I can take the pressure." Mother Goose understood, but still wanted to help Yor feel a little more at home with her newfound position, "You know?' she asked as she pulled out a small pistol with a silencer, "How about we practice using this? Most agents are more than familiar with silenced firearms." The Thorn Princess hesitated, there was no way on Earth she could get the hang of using a gun! Even at that, her stilettos more than did the job, but Mother Goose insisted.
Eventually, she caved in, "Ok", Yor said uneasily as she reached for the pistol, "As long as it's for the mission." Once in her hand, the pistol felt rather alien to her. She had seen it in the Bondman cartoon, but never thought there would come a day where she had the opportunity to hold and operate one.Goose was almost charmed by Yor curiously analyzing the gun, almost like a kid with a new toy. "Remember," Mother Goose noted, "This is the safety switch. It is crucial you keep it set here unless you're opening fire."
"Now if this were the academy, you would have to partake in target practice before I verify your right to use this." Mother Goose noted. Yor noticed a few abandoned cans she found in a nearby disposal bin, "Hand me those!" she beamed, "I know what to do!"
After a moment of confusion, Mother Goose handed Yor the cans. Yor tossed them in the air and one by one, put a bullet through them.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The full moon illuminated the flying tin cans being used for her target practice. "Remember, keep a low profile," the boss warned, "we're lucky nobody is around at the moment, Agent Thorn." "Right, I mean, yes sir!" Yor answered, Goose was happy to see Yor growing into her new role.
As the practice continued, Mother Goose was impressed, she had never seen someone so efficient yet so strong. "You know?" she chuckled, "When Agent Crow started in the academy, he was rather unskilled with weapons." Yor stopped firing and chuckled, "Oh, really? Mr. Serious had struggles being a spy?" Mother Goose nodded, "One practice round, he even shot the sprinkler system instead of the target! Flooded the whole -3rd floor!" Yor laughed, she could never imagine someone so serious fowling up this bad. Unfortunately, someone else was within earshot, "Alright, really funny." groaned Agent Crow, "Let's get a move on, Thorn!"
Their private train pulled up, with a familiar face onboard, "Hawk!" smiled Yor, "Guess what?" Agent Crow tried to correct her to say "Agent Hawk", but Hawk was wondering what had Yor so excited. "I fired a gun!" cheered Yor, before realizing how morbid that sounded, "I mean, not at somebody! It was just a few cans, I swear!" Agent Hawk chuckled at her enthusiasm, proud to see the new recruit finally getting familiar with spy weapons.
Once en route, Hawk handed over some warm clothes, including a thick jacket, earmuffs, and a scarf. "Your next stop is the snowcap mountains of Norfinden. Not only will it be very cold, but the highest peak of the mountain is miles above sea level, so it is crucial not to lose oxygen." Agent Crow was intrigued by the choice of clothing, "Not only will these keep us warm, but also obscure our faces from the general public, killing two birds with one stone." before he turned sternly to Yor, "Just don't lose sight of me out there, ok? I'm not in the mood to play hide and seek with our new rookie." Yor nodded silently, the pressure was on.
The train continued for miles before twisting up the side of the mountain. The weather grew colder as Yor could see a slight snowfall. Once at the top, Yor's eyes shone at the sight of seemingly magical lights in the sky, reminding her of the fabled "Northern Lights" Meanwhile, Agent Crow rested on the way over, he needed to conserve energy for tomorrow.
The train slowed down as it started approaching a small empty station. "Agent Crow. Agent Thorn." Mother Goose instructed, "Once we are parked, you are to rest up and prepare for tomorrow. The mountains are commonplace for skiers and if those terrorists manage to detonate a bomb in the mountain, the whole village could end up buried in the matter of seconds. You two will ride the gondolas up while Agent Hawk and I will be your eyes in the sky."
"Understood." affirmed Agent Crow as the train reached its destination. Yor had grown to be conditioned to all sorts of conditions, so the snow had little to no effect on her. Even at that, she still needed a scarf for the night. "Here's our cabin." Agent Crow stated as he opened the door and let Yor enter first. She laid down on the bed and buried herself under the covers, she hadn't gotten much sleep since she was too busy admiring her surroundings. "Alright Thorn," Agent Crow declared, "We need to be up by 0700 tomorrow. Once we're awake, we must make our way up the gondolas and start investigating." but Yor was already lying on her side, wrapped up in her hair as she dozed off.. Agent Crow sighed and rolled his eyes, this girl was way out of her league, yet somehow remained a mystery even he could not solve.
