If Jeongguk's nails could talk, he was sure what they'd have had to say wouldn't be anything pleasant.
If anything, they would say, 'Stop biting us, you lunatic!'
He couldn't help it. It was a rabbit thing. He'd nibble on the nearest object every time he felt nervous. And he felt plenty nervous now.
"This should work... should really work... if it doesn't... no, it definitely will..." Namjoon's mutters didn't exactly help the state of his mind and nails.
"Can you just inject the damn thing into him?" Jimin asked impatiently, but he looked anxious too.
Namjoon's hand shook slightly, swirling the clear liquid in a vial.
Jeongguk swallowed slightly. He remembered when he wrenched himself out of the bed he'd abandoned months ago, the comfort of sleep still making his thoughts sluggish. After almost two months of sleeping on the sand or rocks, two months of wandering and fretting, and the exhaustion from the previous days' excursions, his body was screaming for rest. He had passed out the moment his head hit the pillow.
He felt like he just blinked, but it was morning by the time he opened his eyes again. A couple of the humans were towering over him, telling him to wake up.
He considered turning around and continuing the rest until he heard, "Namjoon's gonna administer the antidote now!"
He'd shot up so suddenly he almost smashed his head against Yumi's. Brushing and washing his face took less than a minute.
Namjoon did not look like he slept a wink the previous night. Deep bags settled under his eyes as he sat on the cramped desk. The stench from the vial nearly killed every odorant receptor in Jeongguk's brain, but he still looked at its contents like it was magical.
"Namjoon, just do it!" One of the team members hissed, breaking Jeongguk out of his musings. The shrill ringing of the machine pierced through his hazy thoughts like bullets.
Namjoon looked anxious still as he slowly took out the syringe, filling in the liquid that was their only hope now. He glanced at the monitor, wincing as the lines indicated over 140 bpm.
He brought the injection closer to Taehyung's arm, and Jeongguk held his breath. In the last second, Namjoon pursed his lips as he hesitated. Jeongguk snapped, "Oh, will you just do it?! I will personally make sure he doesn't attack you when he wakes up,"
Namjoon let out a breathy laugh, "That's not what I'm worried about,"
"Do it!" Jeongguk insisted, offering no other words. Taehyung's breaths were getting shallower as the seconds passed.
Namjoon took a short breath before plunging the needle into Taehyung's limp arm and injecting the medicine.
The occupants unconsciously held their breaths as the medicine worked its way into Taehyung's system.
They waited, and waited some more for any effect, any sign the antidote was working. Jeongguk clasped his sweaty hands unconsciously, biting his lip hard enough to draw blood as he waited.
A minute passed. Then two. He found himself counting the seconds as he stared at the figure on the bed, unblinking, scared he might miss any sign in that short time interval.
Three minutes. There was a slight shift next to him. Jeongguk couldn't bring himself to look. Four minutes. Taehyung continued lying perfectly still, his breathing still shallow and slight.
It was only after over five minutes that there was a change. A small, so small that you'd miss it if you blinked, tremor went through the hybrid's body. A few seconds passed where Jeongguk dared not move, when--
