"Ms Han," Captain Kim acknowledged curtly, "I'm glad you joined us. I apologize for the short notice. Please take a seat."
Yumi's eyes searched for her short-haired best friend. Immediately spotting her, she strode her way to Hara, taking the floating chair beside her.
"So now that everyone I need is here," Captain Kim began as his eyes swam over everyone present in the room, "We can start discussing what I gathered everyone here for,"
"I suppose everyone here is keeping an ear on the news?" He raised one eyebrow, waiting until everyone nodded, "We are here to discuss the future, our future, and how we can save it,"
At this, he swiped on the monitor display on the table, causing a Graphical Polygram to float midair, displaying moving images in clear sight.
"As I'm sure you would have noticed, the climate gets warmer and warmer as the years go by. Many parts of the world have been flooded due to global warming, and of course, due to this, the birth rate of all of the world has plummeted to the ground."
The polygram displayed a neat line graph, indicating the collapsing birth rates, emphasizing greatly on the world's total population.
"The world's total population has also declined if you compare it with the world only a few centuries before. Of course, the major factor that led to this was the asteroid attack that had taken place only a few decades ago."
The graph was replaced by short clips of screaming people, individuals and families alike, racing and sprinting everywhere in a vain attempt to save themselves from the blue-looking lines that traced the flaming asteroids. Yumi felt miserable just by watching their terror-filled faces, which was clear even through the floating images.
"Three millennia ago," Kim continued, "The world population was about seven billion. Now, however..."
The video clips were now replaced by a number pad with the number seven billion in figures. Kim waved his hand, causing the numbers to rapidly fall to-
"The world population is now only a little over five thousand."
This statement caused everyone in the room to inhale sharply. Everyone seemed to have the same thought running in their head: when had life on Earth come down to this?
"Life other than humans," Kim continued, "Have also faced these hardships. Animals that were common two millennia ago... Are now completely extinct. Such as Tigers, Leopards, Alpacas..., You name it."
"Now, however," He raised his voice, "It's time to save what is left of Earthians."
He gazed at every single silent individual present on the team, "It is time to leave this planet."
There were sudden shouts of shock, revelation, and outrage, "We can't abandon Earth!" One individual shouted out, shocked.
Yumi herself felt emotions she didn't think she could find words to describe. On one hand, she felt sorry. Sorry for this wasted planet, a planet she couldn't imagine leaving. Why should they leave their motherland to waste away?
On the other hand, she thought about the few survivors who still scraped through to live on this planet. If she was all that honest, even if only to herself, she didn't have any hope left for the continuation of life on Earth.
"Where would we even go?" Hara voiced out, "I can't think of any other planet we could survive on,"
"Well, that's the million-dollar question, isn't it?" Captain Kim sighed, "I gathered you guys to discuss that,"
"There was only one planet we could consider before, Mars. However, the Martians wouldn't let humans live there, not after what happened to Earth. They consider humans bad luck," One man about Yumi's age said, pursing his lips.
"Yes, Mr. Kim. I'm quite aware of that myself. Mars... It was the planet I had hoped for. But, the trips we have there ourselves have reduced to far and few. Although the climatic conditions are suitable for humans, that's not the only important factor we need to live. The life of Martians is very different from the life of Earthians. We could never adapt. No, I'm not talking about Mars, I'm-"
"What other planets could we survive in? Mercury and Venus are boiling hot! And we can't shift to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune unless we want to turn into popsicles!"
"Mr. Park, please let me finish, I did not consider any of those planets, nor their moons. In fact, I don't consider any celestial bodies of this Solar System."
What?
What did that mean?
Life outside this Solar System? Was there even one out there?
Unless...
"Captain Kim..." Yumi widened her eyes, "You don't mean... Pluto?"
Her statement caused everyone in the room to go hushed. Every widened eye landed on her, then on Captain Kim.
Kim smiled, "Well... There you have it. Ms. Han cracked it."
