Yumi wasn't sure how she'd initially reacted to Jeongguk falling off the ship. Maybe she screamed, or she cursed, or just went still with shock. The only thing she could remember was pushing Taehyung at Hara and then sprinting.
Her teammates had probably yelled at her, or maybe they yelled for Jeongguk. But the ringing in her ears drowned out their voices as she, her eyes wide and crazed, threw her legs over the starboard.
SPLASH!
The fall into the water left her momentarily dizzy-- she hadn't realized just how high the ship was. The cold stabbed into her lungs, nearly making her gasp. She struggled in the darkness of the sea as the life capsule Namjoon had tied to her wrist tried to float to the top. Her head soon broke through the surface, the oxygen soon filling her lungs.
Her mind cleared slightly, and she dived underwater again, this time with her eyes wide open and in search. In the storm, her limbs seemed to have lost control of her body as she was washed around with the waves. The night sky didn't help with her vision, but that didn't stop her. She had to find Jeongguk.
'Shit. Fuck. Where is he?!' She broke through the water's surface again and took in a deep gulp of air. The tide came on as she thought. Surely Jeongguk's body also followed in her direction...?
Something brushed against her leg as she dove again.
Her ears cut out the sounds of the storm as she turned her head. There he was... sinking like a stone...
Her hands and legs moved instinctively as she swam, desperately begging the sea to cooperate with her. She was closer now, could see his face now.
His arms and legs thrashed wildly, fingers reaching out as if trying to hold on to something that didn't exist. His eyes were wide and glazed as if he was seeing something she couldn't. He clasped a hand around his mouth as if he'd swallowed some of the water.
'Stop.' Yumi wanted to yell at the man who looked so different from the one who'd told her to leave the fight to him. 'Don't. You might hurt yourself!'
She reached out wildly, but the sea was pushing strongly towards all directions away from Jeongguk. His fist pounded at his chest as he struggled with his breath. Her own chest burned as her lungs begged for air. She swam desperately, her eyes burning without her noticing before she caught his waist in a wild snatch.
His legs continued thrashing as she desperately fumbled with the capsule, relief rising inside her much like the sea waves when it began to expand, the air in it helping her swim upward. His eyes dropped lower and lower as he held his head in his hand. His limbs stopped moving just as their heads broke the sea surface together.
"...keok--" Yumi spat as she felt Jeongguk slump against her. On cue, the life capsule expanded more until it was a floating clear balloon around them, creating a thin wall between their bodies and the angry sea. Their ship was nowhere to be seen now, but Yumi would worry about that later.
"Jeonggu--" she choked out as she shook the wet hair off her eyes. Although the capsule stopped the risk of them drowning, for now, it still flopped around enough to make her sick. It didn't help the unconscious Jeongguk's position either.
The skin around his waist had broken out in red under her tight fingers. On closer inspection, she discovered another small bone knife sunken into his side. The dried blood that the sea hadn't managed to wash off clung to his wet clothes stubbornly. Even as the capsule flopped them around, his wounds were made bigger.
"No-- wake..." Yumi snatched up his wrist and fumbled to find a pulse. She could hear what he'd say if he heard her now, with his arms crossed over his chest and rolling his eyes. 'Stupid wirehead. Of course, I won't just wake up.'
