Extract from The Configurations of Myrddin by Sagemaster Wealhmaer Epperly

One of the Citadel's most exceptional details is its prominent circle of outposts. Colloquially designated as the Protectors of Avalon, these outposts have marked the perimeter of our civilisation for centuries. Twenty-four turrets, all of which are constructed into mountain peaks that surrounds Camelot and the city. Manned day and night by sentries who are charged with lighting beacons atop each summit at the first sign of an enemy. The first line of defence. It is a great privilege to be a chosen soldier, and an even greater challenge to descend the Citadel and climb the thousands of steps leading to the summit of each turret. There is no greater honour for an Avalonian.

It is said that Myrddin himself conjured the Protectors from the very soil of New Avalon. Earthly disciples tasked with guarding our civilisation for eternity. However, the reason behind their existence remains a mystery. Centuries of rumour have culminated in the claims that an unseen threat looms in the wilderness beyond our borders. Sentries have returned across the River Dulas with stories of monstrous screams and shadows prowling the landscape. Some were unable to resume their duties; too afraid to relive the horrors that they had witnessed. Retelling tales of the Wildwolves is forbidden by order of King Oswine Pendragon.

The Gods of Annwn have warned throughout history that travelling beyond the border will result in a terrible fate. Former royals and citizens have heeded this warning and dare not venture far to attempt to reason these unnatural sightings. Perhaps this is the true reason for Myrddin's protection. Not only a fortress for Avalonians to defend, but a reminder of the deadly wilderness that lurks beyond our world...
