Elsa
"Are you sure you don't want to eat anything? You haven't eaten anything since last night..."
I winced at the mention of food.
"No thanks. It makes me want to throw up just to talk about it...
"Still.... I find it strange, you don't eat anymore, you just want to sleep, but at night you don't sleep. Maybe something's bothering you?"
I looked down. She had guessed for herself.
"So? What is it?"
"Our father had a cabinet, a kind of office where he often locked himself, remember?"
"Yes, Mom hated it when he disappeared like that for hours sometimes. "
"What do you think he was doing there?"
"Certainly what I have to do now. Terribly long administrative stuff that sometimes eats up half your days and makes you completely crazy. "
"I'm sure there's something else. Our mother kept some of her secrets in the little library I showed you and I'm sure our father did the same in his office. "
"So what? What do you plan to do? This office has always been locked and the key has certainly disappeared with our parents."
"I don't think so. If you had all the most important things in your life neatly stored in a room, you wouldn't take the key with you on a boat. It's got to be in this castle somewhere. "
"How can you be so sure? Maybe he left it in one of his pockets like he used to, remember? The servants who washed his clothes always complained because he left things inside without realizing it. They had to take them back. Our parents couldn't know that this boat trip would go wrong— He may have really taken this key with him you know... And it's certainly at the bottom of the Dark Sea now..."
"What if they knew they would not return?" I murmured weakly, staring at a point in the void.
Anna seemed surprised at my question. She got up, stepped back a few steps, looking frightened.
"What do you mean?" she said, worried.
"Nothing." Forget what I told you, it was stupid. I sigh. I tell you all this because I know the key is here.
"What? How? "
"I talked to Kai.... He knows where she is, but he won't tell me."
"He told you explicitly that he knew?"
"No..."
"How can you say that?"
"Because it's obvious. He got angry when I asked him the question. He knows where she is, I'm sure."
"What do you want to do? We're not going to force him to tell us where that key is."
"No, but we can look for it."
"It's going to take us centuries... Did you see the size of the castle? We're not gonna find anything in here if we don't even have a clue where the damn key is. "
"It can only be in two places: in our parents' room or in the servants' building. "
"Or at the bottom of the Dark Sea..."
I looked up at the sky.
"Are you helping me or not?"
Anna seemed to think. She returned to sit on the chair in front of me.
"Okay, but on one condition. "
"Which one?" I sighed.
"That you FINALLY respect our oath to tell each other everything. If you find something in Dad's office, you tell me. If you find another secret room or whatever in this castle, you tell me. If something's wrong, you tell me. If—"
