At the dead of night, most students of Brooklyn Visions Academy were asleep as demanded by the school's rules.
Only a few, including Miles Gonzalo Morales, were still awake. Unlike the others, who were either finishing their homework late or wasting the night in unhealthy ways, Miles was thinking about his parents.
It was still weird sleeping in a new bed so far away from home. Back home, he was annoyed by his mum's overprotectiveness but now he wished she was with him.
He didn't always get along with his dad, especially whenever they talked about Uncle Aaron, but now that they no longer lived under the same roof he realised just how much Jefferson made him feel safe. Even if Miles had grown up (in less conventional ways) he still felt that way.
And so, unable to fall asleep, he stared at the ceiling while listening to Ganke's loud snoring alternate with Judge's much quieter dozing.
'Poor Judge' is what he thought. He kind of wanted to share his secret with him, too. They weren't exactly close but it felt wrong for him to leave his roommate in the dark like that. Miles believed that he should have been more honourable than that.
Then again, Spider-Woman had pointed out that he should be careful about who he tells his secret to and perhaps she was right. Who knew if he, or Ganke for that matter, could have kept such a secret. Even if they stayed loyal until the end, letting Judge in this crazy world meant putting him in danger, a danger that Ganke was already in.
Speaking of Spider-Woman, what was he supposed to do when she called him?
Instead of his family, Miles was now thinking about how he should deal with this caped ordeal he got himself tied up in. He thought of all the different ways their next encounter could go.
What was he supposed to tell her? Maybe he should ask her how to get web shooters or perhaps how to join the Ultimates.
And then he realised that in every single one of the scenarios he thought of, she was always so rude and authoritarian to him. And so he thought of much more serious questions: would he have to wait for her to call every single time?
Would he need to follow every single one of her orders?
Would she change her mind and lock him up if he messed up even once?
Miles was being overwhelmed by all that negativity. He grabbed his smartphone, trying to to distract himself but he didn't even have the time to pick one of the apps before something else silenced all of his bad thoughts.
The phone's background screen was a picture of the other Spider-Man, Peter Parker. That's when he remembered that Peter didn't have any mentor, no one to guide him or tell him what to do.
Peter wasn't a soldier like the ones at the Triskelion, he was a true hero like the ones in the comics he read. He just intervened whenever someone needed him, with no one else to order him around.
Spider-Man wasn't anyone's sidekick, he was never meant to be and Miles wouldn't have ever been one.
An important decision was made that night. No bosses, no mentor, no guidance, he would do his own thing.

On the other side of town, the Roxxon building was completely empty. There was no trace left of the employees.
To make the scenery even more creepy, there weren't any cars or people around, despite the street lights being turned on. It was the perfect time for someone to go around unnoticed.
A single shadowy character took the opportunity to climb up the side of the Roxxon skyscraper. She did so effortlessly, a person with her abilities didn't need to grab onto ledges or use gadgets, she could just place her hand on any surface, no matter how smooth, and it would stick. She wasn't even sure about how it worked and she didn't want to know.
