I stopped in front of a house and the others stopped behind me with Sam being the closest person to me. My whole body was tense while I stared at the house, but this was where that feeling led me.
"Ry?" Sam asked and furrowed her brows, with her voice barely above a whisper, and I glanced at her from the corner of my eye. She frowned and cocked her head, studying me, worry filling her eyes. "Is everything ok?" she asked, raising an eyebrow in question.
I bit back an annoyed sigh before I shook my head and pursed my lips in annoyance. "I don't know," I said before I cleared my throat and shifted on my feet. "However, this is where that feeling led me."
"Does that mean we can go in?" Little Cason asked, and I glanced at him with a raised eyebrow. He frowned and narrowed his eyes, his eyes turning red. "I don't feel anyone nearby." He looked at me again and blinked and blinked again, his eyes turning brown.
"You aren't allowed to use your powers, Little Cason," I warned with a small scowl on my face and narrowed my eyes. "Why did you do that?"
"To figure out if it was safe, duh." He narrowed his eyes and scowled, and I held back an eye roll. "Now, can we go inside, please? Or do you need someone to unlock the door?" He gestured to Liam, who rolled his eyes and scowled.
I shook my head and set my jaw. "No," I said before I cleared my throat and went to the door with Cooper and Sam following me and the rest stayed behind. "All we have to do is see if the door is unlocked, and..." I grabbed the handle and twisted it, surprised when I felt it give, signalling that it was unlocked.
I stopped and looked at them with wide eyes, my face pale and my heart skipped a beat before it started to pound hard in my chest. "Uh..." I said, not knowing if I wanted to open the door or not. "Well, it's unlocked."
"Well, then open it," Sam urged and gestured to the door, even though there was a look of nervousness on her face. "I want to see what's behind the door."
I could tell that she didn't want to but knew that it was better than standing out here where the feeling was slowly closing around us.
I bit back an annoyed sigh and held back an eye roll before I did what I was told to do and pushed open the door to reveal a dark hallway with no lights on in the building, and my mouth and throat went dry while my heart shuddered and skipped a beat.
Oh, Goddess...
"What did you find?" someone asked from behind me. "Is that a space we can go into?"
I hesitated before I held out my hand and created a small ball of fire on the palm of my hand. "I mean... it's a hallway, so... I think so..." I said and took a step in with my mate following me and then Sam followed us with her mate following close behind her.
"Where does it lead to?"
"Probably to the rest of the house," Cooper said sarcastically, and I couldn't help but bite my lip to keep myself from snorting. "Where else would it lead?"
"I don't know," someone grumbled, and I grinned, biting back another snort.
"Are we following?" Rhett asked from the door. Concern filled his voice, and I could tell that he was nervous but also protective of the kids that we had with us.
"N-"
"Yes," I said, interrupting Sam, instantly. I looked at her, pausing and pressing my lips into a thin line while she shot me an annoyed look. "It would be best if you all came in and close the door behind you."
Sam frowned and narrowed her eyes while she stared at me. She folded her arms across her chest and scowled, and I looked at her with a blank look on my face. "Why? We d-"
"Because we need to get out from outside," I said, interrupting her. "We need to get inside before something bad happens to us because we are running out of time even if you can't feel it, Sam."
Finally, Sam bit back an annoyed sigh and slowly nodded. "Fine," she grumbled before she cleared her throat and looked behind her, gesturing for the others to follow. "Then, everyone can go inside. The people who have kids, keep the kids in their arms, please. I want to make sure that we can get out quickly if we need to."
I didn't say a word, silently agreeing with her before I turned back around and into the way we were going. I took another step inside the house, and the lights instantly went on creating a light that was brighter than my fire and seemed to diminish it without my consent.
"What the fuck?" Cooper yelped, flinching and took a step back and away from me and toward the door while the others behind him took a step back so that he didn't run into them. "What the fuck was that? How did that happen?"
"A ghost," I replied instantly while I gave him an annoyed look, trying but failing to keep the nervousness off of my face. "What else do you think it is about?"
My mate slowly blinked and didn't say a word, unimpressed. He looked at my hand before he looked at me again, silently telling me that it had to be something else, especially since it had diminished the flame that I had in my hand without my consent.
I bit back an annoyed sigh and shook my head before I let my hand fall to my side. "Magic. Someone knows that we are here and is basically telling us that we are in a safe space for the evening," I said, praying that what I said was true.
I shrugged and grimaced, biting the inside of my lip and furrowing my brows. "Or for as long as we are here before we get sent back to our respected packs and lives..."
Sam looked around with a grave look on her face, her eyes more gold than brown before she looked at me. "Are you sure?" she asked and raised an eyebrow in question.
I nodded in confirmation, and my grimace grew deeper. "I am," I said. "I don't know how I know or why we are supposed to be here, but it feels... right. It feels like we have to be here, live here, for the time being and start to trust each other because we are going to need everyone on the same page if we want to survive this."
"Well, then what are we waiting for?" my Cason asked with a grin on his face, and we looked at him. Mischief filled his eyes, and I couldn't help but bite back a small smile, amused. "Let's go explore and see what secrets each room has."
"Ya, maybe there is food in the kitchen," Jonah offered. He wrinkled his nose, and his cheeks turned red. "Just... hopefully it's not food made with secret ingredients from witches..."
I bit back a small snort and nodded while I entered the rest of the way into the house with everyone else entering too, and the door closed with a loud bang before the sound of a lock turning filled the air, signalling that we were locked inside with no way to escape.
Oh, Goddess what have we done?
