Both the cheerleaders and the players were wearing the uniform. It was like promoting the game. It struck seven in the evening, and I was already in my car driving towards the opposing school's field. Now it was time to be the visiting team.
I got out of the car, and immediately the loud music overwhelmed me. Large numbers of people were entering the field. I recognized some thanks to the light blue and white colors they wore, while others wore red and blue, which were the colors of the opposing team.
"You're late," Garam complained.
"It's ten past seven," I informed her. "You told me to be here by seven-fifteen, right?"
"Hurry up and get ready," she ordered.
"I already am," I smiled.
"Your hair is still down," she reiterated.
"Yeah, I know," I smiled again, which made her even angrier.
"I clearly told you no loose hair, tie it up."
"And why can you and those twins leave yours loose?" Anhyeon and Wonhee also had their hair down.
"Because I'm the leader, so tie it up," she handed me a pair of white and light blue ribbons.
"You'll see that some things are going to change around here," I said threateningly, taking the ribbons reluctantly. I couldn't do anything; I was at a disadvantage. She was the leader.
I ran as fast as I could to the bathroom until I finally found it. I entered and encountered Rosé, and couldn't help but laugh seeing her trying to tie her hair into a ponytail; her hair was very long. She turned to look at me, smiled shyly, and returned her gaze to the mirror.
"Let me help," I said approaching her; she just looked at me like, "What's going on with her?"
I reached out my hand for her to give me the ribbon with the ribbons, made the ponytail in her hair, and took out a huge pack of hairpins from my bag. I used them to secure the short strands of hair that escaped, then adjusted the ribbons.
"There you go," I said, and she smiled in relief. "Thanks," she said relieved, "I was going crazy."
"It's nothing," I said seriously, not coldly, just my natural tone. She left the bathroom, and I quickly tied my previously straightened hair into a high ponytail, put on the ribbons, and adjusted my ponytail letting some loose hairs fall.
Amid whistles and vulgar compliments, I arrived at the field.
"You took too long," Garam exaggerated. "Get settled in your place," she indicated, and I followed the order. "Wait," she stopped me, "You," she pointed to one of the girls in the second row, "Go to Haerin's spot." She widened her eyes, clearly not pleased with the idea of being at the back. "Anhyeon, take her place," she said to another girl, and both Anhyeon and the other girl formed an 'o' with their mouths.
"But Garam," the girl said in a high-pitched voice, and the leader rolled her eyes.
"It's just for this time," she said annoyed. "Now change," she ordered.
"Garam," she spoke again.
"Enough, Anhyeon!" she snapped harshly. "Stay there, improve your jumps if you want to be at the front again." Wow, I think she treats me better, her 'enemy,' than her friends. I can't understand why they still follow her. "Get settled there," she told me, and I just watched the amusing scene. I walked to the front and took Anhyeon's old spot.
The game started, shouts erupted as the teams entered the field.
"You're a cheerleader," Garam said to me in syllables. "So cheer!" she shouted since I wasn't moving or shouting anything. I rolled my eyes and got into the "cheerleader" role.
Not more than twenty minutes into the game, it started raining. Initially, it was small drops, but within seconds, it was a torrential rain. Well, not exactly torrential, but it was strong.
"Don't complain, Wonhee," Garam shouted at her. "It's just water." She was right; it was just water. There was no reason to complain as Wonhee was doing.
"My hair will be ruined," she said desperately, and I chuckled. Now I was thankful that Garam had forced me to tie up my hair.
My throat hurt, I was cold, and I was tired. I had never shouted and danced so much, let alone in the rain. And I hadn't even put my plan into action yet.
Five minutes remained to finish the game, both teams were tied, and the field was a mess, the green grass had turned into a huge mud puddle. The girls' uniforms were no longer light blue and white; they were now a dark brown, just like my sneakers, which were ready to go straight to the trash after all the jumping.
Less than two minutes were left, Kim took hold of the ball, jumping and hitting the ball every time it came in front of her, Eunchae further ahead was positioning herself to attack, getting close to the net to wait for Minji's pass. Just as Minji raised her arm to throw the ball, that's when my plan came into play.
"You got this, Kim!" I shouted as loud as I could, followed by my shout; the cheers and applause of all the spectators were heard.
"You're learning," Garam spoke to me, but my gaze was fixed on someone.
Eunchae.
Upon hearing my recognizable shout, she immediately turned towards us. I rolled my eyes to look at Minji, who instead of passing to the now distracted Eunchae, ran towards the net. The whole crowd started shouting more and more, seeing Minji just meters away from the zone, three seconds to finish, and Minji jumped to hit the ball over the net just a second before the end of the game.
Everyone ran towards Minji ecstatic, clapping their hands vigorously, celebrating their victory with loud cheers, this added to the cheers and our chants was incredible.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Eunchae shouted at me; my plan had worked.
"With me?" I asked pretending not to understand.
"I lost the pass because of you," she complained, obviously not the best place to do it, especially with her current girlfriend inches away.
"Because of me?" I asked angrily.
"Why because of her?" Garam intervened.
"I... I..." she stammered like an idiot. "It's nothing, Garam," she took her by the wrist and made her walk behind her. Both glared at me and disappeared from my sight.
"You're wicked, girl," I heard Danielle's voice and couldn't help but laugh.
"Did you see that?" I said triumphantly.
"Everyone did," she said while laughing, "She was boiling with jealousy," she reiterated my information.
"Now we just need the third bird," I smiled mischievously.
"Haerinnie, I'm sure that one will slip away from you," she sang mockingly.
"Why?"
"Look at her..." she nodded towards Minji, who was walking quickly towards the exit with an unfriendly face.
"Damn!" I shouted furiously as I ran for my bag, hearing only Danielle's laughter. "Love you," I said and kissed her cheek, ""...If I were you, I'd start working," I yelled as I ran to the exit.
"Perfect, Kang Haerin," I thought annoyed, "You messed up your perfect plan."
I couldn't see Minji; she had probably already left. Resigned, I walked towards my car, weaving through the cars trying to reach mine. "At least Eunchae and Garam won't have a nice night," I chuckled to myself.
I kept walking in the darkness of the huge parking lot until I managed to spot my car. But before I reached it, someone grabbed my wrist, pulling me strongly and swiftly that I couldn't even scream.
