Chapter Four
Auryn very quickly realized something was off with this group of people. The minute she was training with them, they started to hold back. James seemed to be looking at them with crazy eyes, letting them all know not to mess up. After the warm-ups, Auryn knew why.
She felt the smallest bit of magic from a few of them. They had all started training with swords and she stopped to look at them because she was so surprised. That was magic from her world, or at least it felt very similar. It was almost like it was diluted, as it was so faint, but it was there and she recognized it.
James let out an awkward laugh, and Auryn looked back at him. They both stared at each other for a long minute. James broke first, "you know how to fight with a sword? It's kind of archaic." He then gestured to the majority of people who were training, "most people use guns."
Auryn sighed, great they used guns.
James led her away from the swords and towards the guns. Over here some people also were doing some kind of hand-to-hand combat. It looked like two different styles were being used. Some of them also had small knives.
Auryn very quickly caught on to everything that was happening, and James was a little unnerved. Her entire training lasted a week, which made Mr. Marshal very surprised. But he was also excited to have her 'out in the field' as he put it.
She was given an envelope and brought back into the city she appeared in before. Zach was driving this time, and he brought her to the apartment that was promised. They both went up to check it out. It had the bare minimum, which was what Auryn wanted. A bed, a couch, a TV, cutlery, plates and bowls, and a dresser. Filled with clothes that made Auryn question everyone's taste.
They were all workout clothes and party clothes. Not a baggy thing in sight.
Auryn pulled one out and held it up, it was a top that was mostly string with a little coverage in the front, and it was white. Zach raised an eyebrow, "good thing you get a shopping budget."
Auryn smiled and put the barely a top back, "well might as well get to work then."
Zach nodded, "you've got my number if you need help."
Zach and Auryn had gotten closer during training and were often paired up. Zach also introduced her to this worlds video games. They were just as weird and chaotic as the ones she knew and she wasn't very good but she understood them fairly easily. They even had a drinking contest one night, and Auryn almost won. The alcohol tasted like nothing here since she was used to stupid flavours, but she was drunk before him and tapped out.
Zach left her alone in the apartment and she finally relaxed onto her couch to open her assignment envelope.
There was an access card, a picture, and a note.
The access card had Auryn's picture on it with a fake name, Erin Jones. Auryn frowned, this name did sound similar, and she wondered if it was in that database that Mr. Marshal had mentioned.
The photo was of two women in suits. They were walking on a street, as if they were just living their daily lives. Both with a coffee and a purse.
The note read as follows:
Heather Boon and Toni Reeves. Previous deals have been closed. Find their new supplier. Both work in research & development in Orbit Pharmaceuticals. You now work as a consultant.
Auryn nodded, that was easy enough. At the bottom of the note, there was an address and a time. She looked over the two girls outfits and decided she really needed to look like that rather than the clothes that she was finding in this dresser.
