Chapter Twenty-Four

Auryn had to steady herself as she climbed out of the car. She was so nervous she was about to start shaking. That was a terrible way to meet Willow's family for the first time. She needed to be calm and collected. This was not the time to freak out.

Willow didn't seem to notice and grabbed her hand to pull her up to the mansion. Auryn couldn't call it a house, it was too big.

There was no one to greet them at the door and Willow just waltzed right in sending Auryn's heart into a panic. shouldn't they knock? Wait, was knocking a thing in this world? how had she not noticed if people knocked on doors or not. Why did this matter right now

Willow pulled her down a few hallways and into a large formal dining room where everyone was already seated.

Auryn tried to freeze in place, but Willow continued to pull her.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

"Everyone, this is my girlfriend, Erin." Willow grinned at her family, and they all turned to look a Auryn.

Mr. Marshal looked at Auryn with wide eyes.

"Erin, this is my mom and dad and my brother, Marshal."

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Auryn turned to Willow's parents and tried to give them her best smile. "Hello, it is nice to meet you."

Willow's parents were over-joyed and quickly hopped up to hug Auryn in greeting. She smiled and hugged them back, while Marshal stayed seated and looked at his sister like 'what the fuck.'

Why the hell was he here?

Marshal being Willow's bother was not something Auryn saw coming. She very shakily sat down across the table from him with Willow and her parents to the right of Auryn and Marshal and her father at the head of the table.

"We were so excited to hear Willow had found someone good enough to bring home to us!" Her mother said excitedly. As she said this, people came out from somewhere with plates of food and started placing them in front of everyone.

Auryn tried to give her best smile, and looked at Willow who was rolling her eyes, "mom, don't make a big deal. It's bad enough we have to eat dinner in the formal dining room."

Her mother shushed her from across the table, "we will do whatever we want to celebrate this occasion."

Willow rolled her eyes again and then looked at Auryn nervously, "sorry about them."

Auryn smiled at Willow, "don't worry. We will have fun!"

"Exactly!" Willow's mother said excitedly. "See, I already like her!"

The dinner went by fine, Auryn answered some questions vaguely and some with true answers. Willow shot her a few weird looks, and Marshal seemed to be pretending she was not there.  Overall, Auryn felt it went okay. Willow's mother seemed to never run out of questions and her father was paying attention like this was the last thing he would do.

Every once and a while he asked for clarification on things, but they were minor details and Auryn didn't think twice about his questions.

After dinner, they moved into a nice living room that had an open wall to the backyard. Willow's mother brought out a card game and Auryn was terrified to discover it was trivia. She looked at Willow in alarm and Willow squeezed her hand, "you'll do awesome."

Auryn got no points, which seemed to surprise Auryn. Marshal snickered every time Auryn couldn't answer anything. Willow's parents didn't seem to notice that she couldn't even ball-park an answer. they did think she was from a different country and maybe hey were just so small minded to think that growing up in a different country meant she didn't have internet or receive a good education.
