Chapter Forty-Three

Vince won the first challenge and the whole werewolf team got a celebratory cake at dinner. The table was loud and Auryn felt very stared at for the rest of the day. On top of winning, everyone knew that she had rejected her first one on one fight and they were all gossiping about it. After dinner it was so bad that Brandt actually snapped at some of them.

They spent the evening in Levi's room going over tactical plans for everyones individual challenges and tomorrows group challenge.

Tomorrow was a speed race and Auryn perked up when they were talking about who is good at racing.

"If the brown wings is in there, I can at least come in second," she told Levi.

Levi looked at her confused. "Oscar? Why would the vampires let him compete in the speed race? They are the fastest creatures on the planet?"

Auryn laughed, "because Oscar is fast, but he's predicatble, and I can hitch a ride."

Levi blinked and everyone stared at Auryn.

"If its a vampire, could you also 'hitch a ride'?" Isla asked, using the same phrase uncomfortably.

Auryn shrugged, "probably but I feel like they would be more inclined to eat me."s

Brandt frowned at that while Vince laughed. He was the only one who was already half done his part in the tournament and racked up a good number of points to have them in first place overall. So Vince was pretty relaxed, and they all knew he deserved it.

"I say if its Oscar, we put in Auryn, and if its not, we do Levi." Vince shrugged, "both are good optios and both can get us second place. It also get's Auryn's challenge out of the way early so people can stop gossiping. First human in there, gets second place? I'm all for it."

There were nods of agreement from everyone.

"Alright, its decided," Levi said.

Auryn only got a few hours of sleep, she was pretty anxious. What she had to do she had done many times before, she could do it without blinking, but in front of all these supernatural creatures? Especially ones that hated her? That made her nervous.

Oscar was not going to forgive her also.

When Brandt came to get her for breakfast, she had alrady been dressed and ready for a couple hours. Levi told her before they went down that they will go together to the starting line to prepare each other and to see who would be competing. Auryn agreed it was a good idea and they went to breakfast.

The hall was buzzing with energy, even though Auryn felt like she was going to a funeral.

Brandt made her eat something and Levi led her away afterwards to a different area of the building. They had to go underground for this one, and soon came to a change room where a small crowd was gathering.

The vampires and Oscar were not present yet, so Levi took Auryn over at one of the benches. They had both dressed to compete this morning - like everyone else - so they didn't need to change. Auryn was confused as to why the changing room even existed. It felt a little strange since they were all ready at any moment to be challenged by someone.

She was trying to distract herself, and Levi could tell.

So Levi picked up the conversation, asking Auryn about any Princess duties that she has back home and what kind of things she might have to do. It was a weak distraction because she had no Princess duties, but she liked that Levi thought she did.

Eventually, one of the tournament people arrived to escort everyone out to the racing track. They had to go through a tunnel and up a ramp into a concrete arena. Auryn followed Levi up there and noted that Oscar was in fact with them. Levi had given her a look while they asked everyone to line up so they could write down who was competing and place them on their starting points.
