Chapter Twenty-Two
When Sunday came, Brandt was on edge. Auryn figured there might be another parent visit, or maybe just a visit from his father, but she didn't want to ask. For some reason, she figured that Brandt would be more upset if she asked him what was wrong. So she left it alone, for now at least.
Back in class the next day, things continued as normal. Except for the tension in the air.
Something was happening, but no one was talking about it.
Anna was the only person Auryn asked, and she also had no idea what was going on so it must've been a werewolf thing. Which was starting to get annoying.
In gym, Brandt waited for Auryn outside the change room, which was normal. But what wasn't normal was that he took her hand and made sure she was behind him.
"What is going on?" Auryn finally asked him, "why is everyone freaking out?"
Brandt gave her a look that said he would rather not say, but he wanted to tell her so he did. "There's another school visiting, before the tournament we merge a little and get to know our competition."
Auryn raised an eyebrow, "is it Rider's school?"
Brandt shook his head, "no, they are too close to us and too allied with us. They like to send us the trolls."
Trolls? This cannot be good.
As they walked out onto the school field, Auryn was surprised by what she saw. They were shades green and tall. Some had teeth sticking out of their lips because they were too big for their mouths. Some had bald heads and others had scruffs of hair. All of them had giant muscles and ripped clothes. They looked like they were trying to wear a school uniform but failing miserably. The uniform did not fit, and it caused it to tear all over the place.
Brandt squeezed Auryn's hand as he saw the emotions roll across her face. Fear, wonder, surprise, nervousness.
Levi was in the middle of it, with a couple of their other buddies. They looked like they were trying to have a pleasant conversation, but all they really wanted to do was bolt away.
One of the tallest trolls saw Brandt and called him over. He had some hair on his head and no teeth sticking out and he was a light green colour. His uniform was the most tattered out of everyone in the group.
"Hello," Brandt said to him, pronouncing a name that Auryn's translator didn't even try to decipher for her. "It is nice to see you again."
The troll laughed, "you are too nice for your own good. You are not happy to see us, just as we are not happy to see you tiny wolves."
Auryn realized now that she was closer that the trolls smelt like death. She tried not to react, which she suspected took Levi and Brandt years to master. Or maybe they smelt things differently.
The troll then noticed Auryn, half behind Brandt and hand clutched in his. He sniffed the air, "a human? Really Alpha?"
Brandt growled, "start and you're dead."
The troll laughed, "you can try, looser."
Brandt laughed, "I won't be the one to do it." Then he glanced back at Auryn.
Auryn watched as the troll looked at her in confusion and then she grinned. Brandt thought she could kill the troll? That was so nice of him! "Thanks, baby," she turned her grin onto Brandt.
Brandt gave her a small smile before going back to anger and the troll. "I would be afraid if I were you."
The troll laughed, "only one human scares me."
