- Kendras POV -
6 months later
Nothing had been the same ever since I was taken, along with Aris and Sonya. They ran test after test on me, never let me sleep, I barely ate, and I was so drained of blood I was surprised I even had anymore left. If they weren't draining blood, they put me on the treadmill.
I kept saying to myself, that they were coming. That Minho, Thomas, they wouldn't leave me here. But after six months went by, I kind of gave up that hope.
Now, I was on a train. Whenever they moved me, I always put up a fight, which always led me to had a bruise or two on my face. But, they took forever to heal because I was so drained, so I looked like hell.
While on the train, I suddenly heard the sound of humming and looked to the side to see, Bertha?
I heard the sound of gunshots and then a whirring sound of a helicopter or a ship. Then after a few moment, the helicopter sound was fainter, but now I heard footsteps. I looked up and saw people walking ontop of the cart. I knew it was them They were coming for me. I knew it.
I waited a few minutes before the train came to a halt and I heard Thomas's voice, "Kendra!"
Then Minho, "Kendra!"
I started to shake on my chain and yell, "I'm here!" I waited for them to open the cart but the whirring of a drill wasn't loud enough, it wasn't close enough. I waited for minutes and when the door opened and the only people I saw where the guards- I knew they grabbed the wrong cart.
A tear fell out of my eye and I lost all hope.
- Minhos POV -
These past 6 months were living hell. So the fact that I was finally seeing kendra again- felt too good to be true.
We opened the cart and saw Aris and Sonya and Harriet rushed over to them. I scanned the faces of the people of the cart and looked for her. I looked again- double, triple checked. No.
"No," I whispered.
She wasn't here. No.
I looked to Thomas and said, "She isn't here."
His face dropped and I pushed through everyone and just walked over to my tent. I paced around with my hands on my hips. I tried to calm myself. I ran my hands through my hair and- "Fuck!" I yelled and threw everything off my desk. I kicked the cot and just wrecked my room.
A lamp shattered and Thomas and Newt came running in- "Hey hey, Minho." Thomas said.
I was heaving and he said, "Calm down, just- calm down."
I took a deep breathe and calmed down and then tears started to stream down my face, "She wasn't there." I said.
"I know- I know," Thomas said.
I sat down on my cot and he sat down next to me.
"We are getting her back. I promise." Newt said.
I looked up at him and nodded.
-
Later, we talked to Sonya and Aris about what happened.
"Took you guys long enough to rescue us, Kendra never lost hope." Aris said.
My chest tightened at the use of her name.
"It's good to see you too bud," Thomas said. Aris chuckled and a soft smile crept onto my face. At least he was okay. "So what happened?" Thomas asked.
"I fought back," Aris said, "Tried to anyway. I'm not as strong as Kendra- she, she always fought back no matter how weak she was."
A feeling of pride ran through me to know that even at her weakest she was still the Kendra I know. My Kendra.
"You're lucky you found us at all," sonya said, "They had us on the move a lot, I felt like something big was happening."
"Any idea where they were headed?" Newt asked.
"All I know is..." Aris said, thinking, "They kept talking about a city."
I exchanged a look with Thomas and Newt. "I didn't think there were any cities left," Harriet said. I thought the same.
"That's because there aren't," Brenda said, "Not still standing anyway."
"Okay, but uh-" I said, "What about Kendra? Why wasn't she on the train?"
Aris's face dropped and he looked to Sonya and he said, "I'm sorry Minho but, she was."
My stomach dropped and i let out a breathe, standing up, putting my hands behind my head. "Shit." Thomas swore and i sighed.
-
Thomas laid out a map and pointed to a black circle, "There, that's it." He said, "It's a few hundred miles, based on the railways and everything Aris told us- that's gotta be where they're headed."
"That's where they're taking Kendra. We take everyone who can fight, follow the roads where we can, we can make it back within a week." I said.
"A week?" Vince asked, "It took us six months to get here," he pointed to a spot on the map. "We got over a hundred kids here now, we can't just hang out here forever, after what we just pulled?" Vince said, "You want to just wander off to some random spot on the map? You don't even know what's there."
"I do." Jorge said, "It's been a few years, but I've been there. The Last City. It was WCKDS whole base of operations. If that city is still standing, that's the last place you wanna go hermano. That's the lions den."
"It's nothing we haven't done before." Thomas said.
"Yeah with months of planning, reliable information, the element of surprise. None of which we have now." Vince said.
"Vince, I've thought this through, would you just hear me out?" Thomas pleaded.
"Last time we went off half-cocked I lost everything!" Vince said, but Thomas cut him off. "Yeah well so did I! Listen Vince I know what happened last time was my fault and I'm sorry. Okay? But I lost my sister! My only family I had left!"
We all fell silent.
Vince spoke up again and said, "I know that Thomas. I get that it's Kendra. But you can't ask me to put those kids on the line for one person. I won't do it."
Anger bubbled through me as he said those words and I stood up abruptly and walked out.
"Minho-" Newt said. I just kept walking.
-
That night, Thomas, Newt, Fry, and I all loaded up into a car to set out and get Kendra back.
