A few days later, whenever I recalled the words Prince Louis said to me in the playground, my heart would involuntarily race.
This emotion was too overwhelming and intense, making me somewhat unsure of how to handle it.
"Helen," I chatted with my wolf, "do you think he was telling the truth?"
Helen gave me a definite answer.
Throughout whole history, each generation of Lycan treated their vows with great seriousness. It is said that since ancient times, the Moon Goddess and the Fate Goddess have been sisters. Therefore, every time a member of the royal family made a vow under the moon, the Goddess of Fate would engrave it on a stone tablet. If they break the vow, they will face tenfold punishment..
When Prince Louis said those words, it was in the evening, and I wasn't sure if there was a moon witnessing it.
However, before I could worry for a few days, Maria came to me again. She came with her some this time.
It was my first time meeting Prince Chris. He looked like a mini version of Louis, with big blue eyes and thick eyelashes. He was wearing black overalls, black leather shoes, and white ankle socks.
When he looked at me, my heart was instantly captivated. He curiously bit his nails and asked Maria, "Mom, who is she?"
"She's Claire," Maria replied gently. But after a pause, she continued, "She's your uncle's mate. Do you like her?"
"Yes!" Chris said loudly. I smiled, squatted down to pat his head, and handed him some candy.
"Thank you," Chris said politely, accepting the candy.
I stood up and glanced at Maria. There wasn't much for me to say to her, so I simply smiled politely. She seemed momentarily stunned but quickly returned the smile with warmth.
She was wearing an emerald green sleeveless dress today, with no other jewelry except for the bracelet Louis had given her. It was a simple outfit, but still elegant and beautiful.
Noticing my gaze on her bracelet, she even smiled a bit sheepishly. She proactively hid her wrist behind her back and explained in a soft voice, "I'm sorry. I've been wearing it for so many years. Do you mind it? If you do, I can take it off."
"... No, I don't mind."
I replied. But I couldn't deny that my feelings were indeed somewhat complicated now.
Maria was different from all the other women I had encountered before. She was gentle, beautiful, generous, and intellectual, as if she possessed all the qualities of goodness. From the few times I had interacted with her, I could also sense that her true nature wasn't bad.
Otherwise, she wouldn't have become the mate of two princes and eventually married Prince Liam.
Her only black mark was probably abandoning Prince Louis and betraying his sincere feelings.
However, she was now standing in Prince Louis' villa, waiting for him to accompany her to attend the parent-child activity at Chris's school. Honestly, this confused me a little.
When talking to me, Maria rarely revealed her true emotions. She was like an enigma, and I couldn't understand what her hidden thoughts truly were.
"Let's go," Prince Louis said as he came down from the second floor. Today, he had changed into a slightly more casual beige suit, looking even more youthful and handsome than usual. I noticed Maria looking at his outfit, and a slightly nostalgic expression crossed her face. "Thank you for being willing to help me with this favor, Louis."
"No need to thank me," Louis replied indifferently. "Get in the car."
I was assigned to the front passenger seat, while Louis and Maria with her son sat together in the back.
Because there were reporters waiting outside the school for the parent-child activity, as a public figure, Louis had to demonstrate his affability towards Maria and her son to dispel the rumors of him assassinating his elder brother to seize the throne.
But on the way, I saw through the rearview mirror that Louis was talking affectionately to Chris while Maria occasionally added a few words. I still couldn't help feeling a pang of bitterness.
The scene was incredibly harmonious, and I had to admit that even I, knowing the truth, would have thought they were a family if I didn't know their identities.
I lowered my gaze, resting my head quietly against the headrest of the passenger seat. Laughter and cheerful chatter came from the back. Chris must have said something amusing, as he managed to make both adults laugh.
The joyous atmosphere filled the car. When I noticed Maria looking at me through the rearview mirror, I nonchalantly curved my lips. She smiled back at me, somewhat embarrassed. However, the next second, Chris attempted to unfasten his seatbelt and stand up to give an impromptu speech in the car. Maria and Louis quickly pressed him back into his seat.
I averted my gaze.
During the latter half of the journey, I became even more restless, feeling like I was a redundant person. Perhaps I shouldn't have come along with them, I thought.
In this torment, the vehicle finally reached its destination.
Louis was the first to step out of the car, followed closely by Maria and her son. As soon as they got out, they were surrounded by a barrage of flashing lights, and reporters swarmed, trying to break through the security guards' cordon.
I sat quietly in the car, unblinkingly observing them.
I overheard someone asking Louis if he would adopt Chris into his family. He remained noncommittal about the question but nodded, indicating that he would raise his brother's son as if he were his own.
Meanwhile, Maria stood half a step behind him, holding Chris's hand, and flashed the same elegant smile towards the cameras. She slightly tilted her head, gazing at Louis' back with a tender look.
Suddenly, I felt a bit weary, even though it hadn't been three hours since I got out of bed.
"Excuse me, please make way."
Prince Louis suddenly addressed the incessantly questioning reporters. He pushed them aside and circled around the car, coming to the outside of the front passenger seat.
Through the tea-colored glass, our gazes met in the air.
Even though I knew he couldn't see me inside the car, I had this feeling that he was looking at me. My heart started to beat faster involuntarily.
I saw Louis bend down and open the door for me. Then. With countless eyes watching, he calmly extended his hand towards me.
"My mate," he said, "let's go."
