Louis's POV
"The king's decree?"
I forcefully suppressed the nameless anger rising from within as I kept a vigilant gaze on Garfield standing proudly below the stage.
"Do you know that forging the king's decree is an act of treason, Evans?"
However, despite my warning, I couldn't discern any fear or hesitation in Garfield's dark eyes.
"Of course, I do, Your Highness. I believe the king entrusted it to me because he values my loyalty to the royal family."
"Loyalty? What a loyalty."
Watching Evans utter these nonsense words, I let out a cold chuckle. The innate aura of the Lycan helped me quickly stabilize my mind, and my eyes scanned the nobles in the ballroom. They wore various expressions, but none dared to step forward and directly challenge Evans. Very well. I narrowed my eyes.
"Since you are fully aware of the consequences, Evans, then, after the ball ends, come to my study to see me."
"No, Your Highness." Unyielding, Evans persisted, "The king once ordered me to publicly announce this news in front of all the nobles."
"What trick are you playing at, Evans?"
Facing Evans's relentless approach, I clenched my fists, restraining the growing anger within me.
"As I have emphasized earlier, I have always been faithfully devoted to the royal family." Evans bowed calmly to me, but when he raised his head again, his face instantly adopted a serious expression.
"A week before the king's death, he secretly summoned me. The king ordered me to publicly announce a letter he entrusted to me at Louis's ball."
This time, without waiting for my permission, Evans, in front of all the nobles, showed a sealed letter.
I could vaguely see the royal emblem — a roaring wolf — imprinted in dark red wax on the envelope.
"Do you wish to inspect the authenticity of the letter, Your Highness?"
"No need."
In the presence of everyone, more than just myself could see that seal. When everyone assumed the letter to be genuinely from the king's own hand, its authenticity became meaningless. Realizing that I could only proceed according to Evans's plan, I narrowed my eyes, gritting my teeth as I spoke.
"You're the Alpha of the Black Mountain pack, and the Elder Council's advisor. No one understands the consequences of forging the king's letter better than you, right?"
"Correct, Your Highness. You've reminded me."
