Claire's POV
"Your Highness." Accompanied by knocks, Alfred's steady voice came from outside the door. "Evans wishes to see you."
"Hmm." Just mentioning that name, Louis's temperature seemed to drop a few degrees. "I knew he'd come sooner or later. Tell him to wait for me in my study."
"Understood, Your Highness."
"Can I go with you?" I leaned against Louis, tilting my head up, carefully requesting. "I want to know what Evans is up to, please."
My pleading gaze eventually swayed Louis. After a moment of contemplation, he nodded to me. "Alright, but I need you to hide in the corner of the study, don't make a sound. Can you do that?"
"Of course." I smiled, wrapping my arms around Louis's neck, planting a kiss on his lips. "I promise to be a perfect invisible person."
Louis's POV
"Your Highness."
Hearing my approaching footsteps, Evans turned around in the study, bowing to me.
I scrutinized Evans's face; the wounds from our last fight still marked his features. Although now he had bandages on, bruises had already spread, almost reaching the corner of his eyes.
"These are just minor injuries," Evans noticed my gaze. "The doctor says I'm fine."
"Compared to the condition you were in when you were with my brother during military exercises, these injuries are indeed nothing."
My unintentional remark caught Evans off guard. His hand tightly gripped the wolf head on his cane, as if trying to crush it. Yet, even so, Evans's frail body couldn't control the slight tremble.
In that instant, I keenly sensed a crack in the barrier that always enveloped this mysterious man. "That's a distant past. Time always catches us off guard."
Evans sighed in response.
At this moment, his tone was even somewhat gentle, which felt strange for us who had fought just a while ago.
"However, I still feel it's necessary to apologize to you, Evans. Even though I still believe that letter isn't genuine."
"Well, I accept your apology, Your Highness. But I cannot accept your accusations against me." "Don't worry, I'll find evidence."
I didn't have much patience to deal with Evans, so I asked straightforwardly, "So, what did you come to tell me today?"
"I'm here to give you some advice, Your Highness," Evans nodded, his steady tone flowing smoothly. "As an advisor to the Elder Council, I believe you currently need my assistance."
