Claire's POV

"Just tell him, Claire."

Seeing the deadlock between me and Louis, Olivia beside me urged in a low voice, nudging my arm anxiously.

"If you don't want to, I'll go tell him!"

"No!"

I immediately stopped Olivia.

I couldn't let Louis know that the necklace was actually lost by Olivia. I knew well how serious the consequences of losing a royal item could be. Even though Olivia was my friend, she probably wouldn't easily escape punishment.

More importantly, I didn't think she could handle Prince Louis's wrath.

So, the best solution was for me to take the blame.

I cleared my throat, forcing back the tears welling up in my eyes, "Your Highness. I'll tell you what happened."

"Just a while ago, I accidentally lost the necklace you gave me. As for the jewelry box Olivia mentioned, it's..."

"Details, Claire."

This was the first time Louis interrupted me so rudely. He stared into my eyes, his tone harsh, making every word he said feel like an interrogation.

"Tell me, what necklace?"

"It's the necklace with the blue heart-shaped sapphire."

Being publicly judged by the man I loved most made me feel incredibly embarrassed. At this point, I couldn't control the sadness and frustration surging in my heart, and I started to sob softly.

"You know which necklace I'm talking about. The blue gemstone on the necklace is from the ring your mother left."

Louis's gaze was obscure, a mix of tenderness and resentment. "So, you still remember that.""Yes. I've always cherished it, but—"

"Cherished?" Louis snorted, as if he heard a joke. "If you truly cherished it, you wouldn't have lost it! If you truly cherished it, you wouldn't have casually kept it in such a common jewelry box! For god's sake! Your cheap box would probably be treated as trash by servants if it fell on the ground! You treated it like trash and you told me you have always cherished it?"

"I didn't!" Tears streamed down my cheeks, but I couldn't bother to wipe them away. I raised my voice, vehemently rebutting Louis, "That necklace is the most precious gift you've ever given me, and I've always appreciated it. I never treated it carelessly!"

My desperate cry extinguished Louis's anger. He stopped accusing me and his cold gaze quickly scanned the faces of everyone in the lounge.
