Louis's POV

Twenty minutes ago.

The hurried footsteps disturbed my contemplation in the study, where I had been staring at a portrait of Liam.

"Your Highness, we've captured a suspicious man in the castle's corridor. We haven't ruled out the possibility of him being an assassin, so we need to escort you to a safe place immediately!" However, facing the panting guard, I stood up from the armchair, buttoned my suit jacket, and spoke calmly.

"Have you identified the man yet? And where is Claire?!"

"We have already dispatched a patrol team to protect Claire and Maria! As for the captured man... he insists he's not an assassin, but we haven't confirmed his identity yet."

"Wait, did you just say, Maria?"

I squinted at the guard, "She's in the castle now? With Claire?"

"Yes, Your Highness."

"When did this happen?"

"About ten minutes ago." The guard answered with his head down, "Your Highness, should we use the whip on the suspect? Give me a little more time, and I believe we can get him to talk."

"No."

A suspicion emerged in my mind, and I decisively refused the guard's request.

"Send another team to ensure Claire's safety. Tell them I don't want any harm to come to her. Understood?"

"Yes, Your Highness." The guard nodded but then hesitated and raised his head, "What about... Maria?"

"Her?" I scoffed, "As long as she doesn't harm Claire, I don't care about her."

"Understood!"

"But if she dares to threaten Claire's safety..." I squinted, a surge of murderous intent rising within me, "Then don't wait for my order. Kill her immediately!"

"Yes, Your Highness." The guard's voice trembled. I didn't need to look to know his forehead must be sweating profusely.

"Now..."

"Take me to see this audacious 'assassin.'"

I raised my hand, stopping the guard from voicing his objection, "Maybe I've met this man before."

Perhaps because the so-called assassin was too timid, the guards hadn't imprisoned him in the dungeon but kept him in an unused room on the west side of the castle.

Thus, within minutes, I saw the so-called "assassin"—sure enough, it was Andy Barton, Maria's friend.
