So, Katherine was out of the tomb, freed from Elijah's compulsion since he was daggered by Alaric. Bonnie had also lost her powers to the elder Martin witch, then got them back the night he burned the Mystic Grill.
And if you're wondering why he set the Mystic grill on fire, well Damon lit his son on fire with a flamethrower while they were casting a spell to try and remove the dagger from Elijah's body. Eliana had tried on her own to do it, sneaking into the Salvatore's house, but Damon had foiled her plan and kicked her out.
Elena's mother, Isobel, had also returned and showed up on their doorstep, revealing to Jenna that she was alive, although a vampire, and straining the relationship between Alaric and Jenna. Bonnie had found the sight of the massacred witches, absorbed their power and was now an even more super badass witch than she already was.
Oh, and Isobel had died, compelled by Klaus to take off her daylight necklace and burn to crisp in the sun.
All this information was retold to her through Elena and Bonnie as Eliana had been avoiding Stefan, and Damon after the whole fiasco at the lake house, she was glad Elena didn't hate her though.
She'd been practicing magic with Bonnie, stealing a bit of magic here and there from Bonnie and Caroline so she'd know what to do. She knew it hurt who she took from, so she didn't do it too often.
And, unknown to Eliana, her uncle Alaric was no longer Alaric. She'd barely been back to the apartment, staying with either Caroline or Bonnie, so she had no idea Katherine was being held hostage at the apartment either.

Alaric-or should I say Klaus?- was standing before Katherine, holding up two shirts to decide which of them looked better. "Okay, Bad....or badder?"
Katherine sighed, glancing at the shirts with disinterest. "The dark colors suit you better."
"Oh, thank you, honey." Klaus threw both the shirts down onto the bed, continuing to speak to Katherine as he undid his shirt. "Okay, Pop quiz. The dagger and white ash are in the Salvatore's possession, correct?" He asked as he began putting on the shirt.
"The dagger was used to kill Elijah. You'll find him in the basement of the Salvatore house." Katherine replied, her voice sounding strained.
"Okay, that dagger needs to stay exactly where it is. The last thing I need to do is resurrect Elijah. Oh, that guys a buzzkill."
