"These Ghosts Gotta Go"

___

Eliana stood with her uncle and Jeremy in the midst of everyone setting up for illumination day.
This town had a lot of events, she could barely keep up with half of them.

And, while she'd been gone over the summer, Jeremy had been seeing his dead ex-girlfriends.

But what's more crazy is Matt had been seeing his dead sister, Vicki, and had anchored her from the other side to do as she wanted, which meant try to barbecue Elena.

She'd missed all that.

"As a longtime member of the historical society, I am especially proud to be kicking off this day of festivities. Thank you, volunteers." Carol Lockwood said from the podium, "Tonight we turn off our towns lights and flare up our lanterns in honor of the night of Illumination started by our founders a 150 years ago. Here's founding family member, Tobias Fell with a history lesson."

Applause erupted from the small crowd, as Jeremy leaned towards Alaric. "And what are we doing here?"

"Tobias Fell is the head of the history department. I didn't have a choice."

"Alright that explains what you're doing here." Jeremy said, and then looked to Eliana before back to Alaric, as if asking why they were here.

"Well I'm the one who can fail you if you don't help me out. And she lives rent free in my place so.." he trailed off, and Eliana huffed.

Elena came up to the three of them, sort of out of breath from searching through the crowd. "Hey, sorry I'm late. What did I miss?"

"A boring speech from Mrs. Lockwood, nothing much." Eliana answered, shrugging her shoulders as Elena giggled.

"The first illumination was held in celebration of the newfound prosperity that Mystic Falls enjoyed after the war." Tobias Fell droned on, and Jeremy chuckled under his breath, causing Elena and Eliana to look towards him.

"What's so funny?" Elena asked, but Jeremy only gestured to Tobais.

"To indicate that it was safe for their neighbors to come outside again. That night was an opportunity for the community of Mystic Falls to come together. A chance to strengthen ties with neighbors, business owners, and returning soldiers."

As a small breeze blew by, a bit of dandelion fuzz flew up from the patch of grass next to them into Elianas face, causing her to sputter and try to spit out the few that got into her mouth. Jeremy and Alaric huffed out a few laughs, Elena muffling hers more than them.

A set of footsteps came up behind them, accompanied by a laugh. "Are you alright?"

She nodded, brushing away the bits that got into her mouth and when she looked up, she saw it was the boy from the bonfire. Nathan.

"Yeah. The dandelion attacked me."

He let out another chuckle, and Elena nudged her with her elbow, asking with her eyes who the boy was.

"Oh, right. Nathan, this is Elena, her brother Jeremy and my uncle Alaric." She gestured to each one as she spoke, before pointing to Nathan. "You guys, this is Nathan, whom I don't know the last name of. He just moved here."
