Ruby's POV:

"Oh, hi," I said shyly.

"You doin' OK?"

"Yeah, I was just thinking about this whole ordeal and my mom."

"Oh yeah, this seems pretty complicated."

"Yeah, it is."

Oscar slowly walked over and sat down next to me. I glanced at his shirt, where I cut him with my scythe.

"Hey, Ruby?" Oscar asked.

"Yes?"

"Are you feeling OK since the battle? I know you were stressed out about everything and the whole thing about your mom, but I just want to know how you feel."

I lowered my head. My thoughts were spinning from the events over the past few days, and I wasn't sure what to think. "Honestly, Oscar, I don't know. I knew my mother for years, and she didn't tell us much about her past. Now that I'm learning this, I feel like she lied to me. But then she had a reason not to say anything, and it's not like her past has anything to do with me or Yang's future. I wanted to believe she had a reason, but at the same time, I wish she could've been honest with us."

"I bet she did. If the time had been right, she might've been able to tell you what's going on, but then, if she told you, would it matter?"

"It's not that it matters; it just feels like something else she could have shared with me and my family."

"Well, I've only had my aunt, but I understand parents have things they can't tell their kids. I'm sure your mom must've felt sad that she couldn't tell you anything. If Alias had known her and been happy to meet you and Yang, she must've wanted to tell you about him. But adults have their reasons for doing things, and we young ones have to trust them even if we don't want to. But I'm sure your mom would have wanted to be honest with you. She clearly loved you; I can tell she was a wonderful mother."

"Oh, she was. I miss her a lot, and Alias makes me miss her even more. I need to get answers from him."

"I'll help you. I'll always be on your side, Ruby, I promise."

My heart melted, and I smiled at him. "Thanks, Oscar. You're always there for me when I need you."

Oscar smiled and did something that surprised me: he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled himself towards me. "I will always be here for you, Ruby."

I smiled at his reassuring face and felt myself overcome with emotion. I squeezed him tightly, and he did the same.

"I'm sorry about that, Ruby. But hey, I know your mother didn't share her past with you, but I can." Oscar reached into his coat and pulled out a significantly damaged cookie.

"Where'd you get that?" I asked.

"I've had it in my coat for a while now. I'm sorry it's broken. It got like that when you...cut me."

I blushed. Was he planning on giving this to me even back then? I stared at the cookie's unusual shape and noticed it looked...like a heart.

"How long have you had this?" I asked, trying not to draw attention to its shape.

"I got it for you the day before...you cut me. I wanted you to have this to feel better, but I returned, and you-"
