I wondered where Sarah could be, come to think of it I hadn't really seen her all morning. As I started to raise up out of the plush, inviting bed, I suddenly felt Luka's strong arm wrap around my waist, pulling me back down.
"No leaving," he muttered, his deep voice rumbling in my ear. I turned to look at him, surprised to find him still asleep beside me.
It was highly unusual - Luka was typically the first one up, already immersed in his work on his laptop by the time I stirred.
Yet here he was, his features relaxed in slumber, dark lashes fanning across his chiseled cheekbones. I couldn't help but notice how peaceful and almost vulnerable he looked in this unguarded moment.
It was a stark contrast to the cool, collected demeanor he usually projected.
"Fine," I conceded, settling back into the warmth of his embrace.
As much as I was curious to find Sarah, I found myself strangely reluctant to leave Luka's side. There was an undeniable pull, a magnetism that kept me anchored to the bed, to him.
Later in the evening, I tried to look around for Sarah, but as I wandered the halls, I suddenly bumped into Volcov.
"Oh hey, you wouldn't happen to know where Sarah is?" I asked, hoping he might have some insight.
Volcov chuckled, shaking his head. "Nah, but I'm sure she'll pop up soon. That girl has a way of making herself scarce when she wants to."
I furrowed my brow, a twinge of concern creeping in. "Really? Do you have any idea where she might have gone?"
"Ah, don't worry too much about it," Volcov said, waving a dismissive hand. "Sarah's a tough one. I'm sure she's just off doing her own thing, as usual." He paused, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Though if I had to guess, she's probably off causing some kind of mischief somewhere."
I couldn't help but smile at that.
"Sounds about right."
Volcov had always had a knack for reading people, and if he wasn't worried, then maybe I shouldn't be either. S
till, I couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something might be amiss.
"Well, if you happen to see her, let me know, will you?" I asked.
"You got it," Volcov replied with a wink. "In the meantime, try not to worry too much. Sarah's got a way of taking care of herself."
With that, he gave me a friendly pat on the shoulder and continued on his way, leaving me to ponder the mystery of Sarah's whereabouts.
Feeling a bit unsettled after my conversation with Volcov, I decided to seek out Luka. If anyone would have insight into Sarah's whereabouts, it would be him.
I found Luka in his study, as usual, intently focused on the work before him. He looked up as I entered, his brow furrowing slightly.
"Something the matter?" he asked, his deep voice cutting through the silence.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to broach the subject. "Well, I, um... I was wondering if you knew where Sarah might be. I haven't seen her all day, and Volcov didn't seem too concerned, but..."
Luka leaned back in his chair, his piercing gaze holding mine. "Relax," he said, the word rolling off his tongue in a way that sent a chill up my spine. "likely just visiting family. She likes to disappear for a while."
Not wrong there
I nodded, but the unease I felt refused to dissipate. There was something about the way Luka spoke, the subtle inflection in his voice, that made me uneasy. It was as if he knew something he wasn't telling me.
"I see," I murmured, my fingers fidgeting with the hem of my dress. "I just... I can't help but worry, you know?"
Luka's expression softened ever so slightly. "No need to worry," he said, his tone almost soothing. "She'll return when ready."
I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to his words than he was letting on, but I knew pressing him further would be futile. Luka had a way of keeping his cards close to his chest.
"Alright," I conceded, offering him a small smile. "Thank you, Luka."
As I turned to leave, I couldn't help but feel a lingering sense of unease. Something about Luka's reassurance had only served to heighten my concerns, rather than allay them.
