As Sarah walked through the door, I nearly jumped into her arms, overjoyed to see my best friend again. But the moment was short-lived, as she looked at me with a confused expression.
"Damn, girl, I was only gone for a week," she said, a hint of amusement in her voice.
"I know, but Luka said you were gone to visit family, and I didn't really believe him," I admitted, feeling a bit sheepish.
"Yeah, I know it was weird," Sarah replied, shaking her head.
"Oh, and I also made a new friend here, her name is Winter."
She perked up at that, a small smile spreading across her face. "Winter? That's great! I'm glad you were able to make a new friend while you were away."
Sarah studied me for a moment, her brow furrowing. "How was it while I was gone?" she asked, her tone cautious.
I hesitated, unsure of how much to share. "Uh, well, it was weird. I was so used to working so many jobs for so long that just... relaxing felt foreign," I admitted. Then, I felt my cheeks flush as I remembered the encounter with Luka. "I mean, I did have a weird moment with Luka, but it's nothing, really."
Sarah's eyes widened, and she placed a hand on my arm. "A weird moment with Luka? What happened?" she pressed, her voice laced with concern.
I chewed on my lower lip, debating how much to reveal. "It's just... he was acting strange, and he showed me his scars, and it was all just very... intense," I said, my words tumbling out in a rush.
I mumbled something about the encounter with Luka, and Sarah's expression brightened, almost as if she was relieved to change the subject so quickly.
As we were talking, I heard someone walk in, and Winter's voice rang out. "Oh, hey, I didn't know that demon you call a husband allowed you to have other friends that weren't family," she laughed.
I watched as Sarah's expression darkened. "I already don't like her ass," she muttered under her breath.
"Oh, relax," I said, trying to diffuse the tension.
"Yeah, yeah, what's your name?" Winter asked, directing her question at Sarah.
"Sarah," she replied, her tone clipped.
Winter's eyes widened. "Oh, wait, I thought you were dead," she said, a hint of amusement in her voice.
Sarah's jaw tightened. "Well, I'm not," she retorted.
"Usually, people aren't allowed to leave the island so suddenly," Winter mused, her gaze shifting between the two of us.
Sarah shrugged. "Pretty much, anyways, where do you guys wanna go?"
I glanced between the two women, feeling the palpable tension in the air. It was clear that Sarah and Winter were not exactly seeing eye to eye, and I couldn't help but wonder what that might mean for the delicate balance of our situation.
As we discussed our plans for the day, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
