"Hi there," I greeted cheerfully.
The woman, who seemed absorbed in her computer screen, responded with a dry "hi."
"My name's Y/N, and I'm here to help you with your workload," I explained.
At first, she seemed dismissive, but her demeanor shifted when she noticed my lanyard.
"Oh, I'm sorry. It's just that-" she started, sounding apologetic.
"It's okay. Just give me a rundown of the situation," I reassured her.
She proceeded to explain how the manager kept assigning her miscellaneous tasks, making it difficult for her to keep up with her primary responsibilities.
"Alright, I'll see what I can do. Next time he assigns you something outside your job description, don't hesitate to redirect him to me," I advised, flashing her a reassuring smile.
She smiled back gratefully, and I made a note in my notebook about her situation. As soon as I finished jotting it down, I noticed the manager approaching her cubicle. She pointed in my direction, and he walked over, looking slightly flustered.
"You must be new," he remarked, eyeing my lanyard.
"Yes, I am. Why are you instructing your employees to perform tasks that aren't part of their job?" I asked calmly.
"I-I don't. She's lying," he stammered, visibly uncomfortable.
"But I just saw you. How about you simply never do it again, okay?" I confronted him calmly.
"Okay," he muttered, walking back to his office with a sulky expression. I turned to the woman at cubicle 15.
"Now you can catch up on your work," I told her with a smile.
"You're a lifesaver," she replied gratefully.
"Now, who else needs assistance?"
By the end of the day, I had completed everything on the list and spent the remaining time helping out my colleagues. Eventually, I was summoned to Luka's office.
"Journal," he mumbled, and I handed it to him. As he scanned through the entries, I couldn't help but feel a bit nervous.
"Did I do good?" I asked tentatively.
"Amazing," he replied, looking up from the notebook. I nodded, feeling relieved.
"Also, I wanted to talk to you about something. Why did that manager at the apartments call me your girlfriend?" I inquired, curious about his reaction.
He paused, his gaze shifting away before muttering something in another language.
"You don't like talking a lot, do you?" I remarked, sensing his discomfort.
He shook his head in response.
"I didn't think so. How do I clock out?" I asked, changing the subject.
He showed me the process, and I followed his instructions before bidding him farewell for the day.
The next day, I noticed Luka and his brother weren't present, but I received a handwritten note detailing my tasks and schedule. Later on, as I observed Luka's stern demeanor upon his return, a sense of unease settled over me.
During lunchtime, as I entered the cafeteria, a girl tugged at my shirt.
"How well do you know those two?" she asked, her expression conveying urgency.
"Not very well, I guess," I replied, perplexed by her sudden concern.
As the week progressed, I found my rhythm at work, completing tasks efficiently and assisting others whenever possible.
One day, Volkov approached me with a request. "Could you be a doll and grab a file on Luka''s desk?"
"Sure, is there a specific one I need to grab?" I inquired, eager to help.
"Yeah, it'll have some diagrams on the first page, can't miss it" he instructed.
Entering Luka's office, I was taken aback by the sight of papers scattered all over the floor.
"Oh my, how will I ever find that file," I muttered to myself, scanning the mess around me.
After rummaging through a few files, I finally found the one he requested on the fourth attempt. Returning to him, I handed over the file, but he seemed somewhat disappointed, a subtle expression I couldn't quite decipher.
"You know, my brother has a soft spot for you," Volkov remarked unexpectedly.
"Does he?" I replied, surprised by his revelation.
"Oh yes, he doesn't really speak much. I didn't even know he knew that much English until he saw you," he continued.
"Interesting," I mumbled, feeling a mixture of confusion and curiosity.
"Stay after work; I have a task for you, just reorganize his desk. Such a mess" Volkov added before dismissing me.
Later on, as instructed, I remained behind to reorganize Luka's desk. Sorting through the papers, I encountered a few challenges but managed to make progress.
As I reached the last few files, I stumbled upon something unexpected. Opening one of them, I was shocked to find a document with my name on it. I quickly rationalized that perhaps the manager had included it mistakenly. However, my unease grew as I opened another file to find a picture of me with my parents, accompanied by a note stating "not related, no contact."
My heart pounded in my chest as a chill ran down my spine.
How did they...
What...
Disturbed and perplexed, I hastily put away the files, clocked out, and hurried home. It wasn't until later, in the midst of my distress, that I realized Luka had been standing right outside the door, a fact that escaped my notice in my state of shock.
