What Lies Beyond, Chapter 22
At General Hospital-Maya was at the nursing station looking at a file from a patient when Portia came by. "It's quiet today." "Yes, it is. Maybe that's a good thing; we have been through a lot these past few weeks," Maya said. "We have," Portia replied as Monica came over. "Dr. Quartermaine, it's good to see you." "You too. Dr. Robinson, I wanted to check on the hospital and see how Dr. Hardy is adjusting to working here," Monica said. "He's not here yet," Maya replied. "Maya, you left early this morning," Portia noted. "Yes, I wanted to get here early. Dr. Ward has been a great addition to this hospital," Maya added. "We have the best doctors here," Monica said as Tommy approached. "Dr. Hardy, it's so good to see you. I want to properly welcome you to the hospital on your first day as the pediatrician," Monica said. "Thank you, Dr. Quartermaine. It's good to be home," Tommy replied. "Yes, it is. Tommy's mother was a pediatrician here—one of the best," Monica said. "Yes, Mother was," Tommy agreed. "Well, I'll let you go. I have a meeting about a fundraiser we're organizing to finance the hospital," Monica said, then left with Lucy as she approached. "Tommy Hardy," Lucy asked. "Yes, Lucy. This is Dr. Tommy Hardy—our new pediatrician. Welcome home; it's been a while," Lucy said. "Yes, it has," Tommy replied. "Let's go to our meeting," Monica added as she and Lucy headed out.
Tommy strolled past the memorial photo of past doctors and nurses, pausing at a picture of Steve. "Grandfather, I will do my best to be the best doctor and honor your memory. I love you, and I wish you were here," Tommy said, touching the picture. Just then, Steve appeared. "Grandfather, your legacy is hard to live up to. You were one of the best doctors." "Yes, he was, but we both will make him proud, along with Sara and Elizabeth," Steve assured him. "Yes, we will," Tommy replied.
In Monica's office, Carolyn and Monica discussed the fundraiser. "Have you picked a location?" Carolyn asked. "Yes, now that the hotel is open, we want to hold it there," Monica responded. "I'll talk to AJ—I'm sure we can have it there. We need to raise a lot of money. This hospital is in more financial trouble than I realized, especially with the new hires." "We don't want to close the hospital," Carolyn added. "We wouldn't let that happen," Monica assured her.
