"Is this okay?"
After minutes of arguing I finally got him to get into the bed too. He kept talking about wanting to respect my privacy or something which was sweet in the beginning. But I just couldn't let him take the floor while I had his bed.
"Don't worry, Thomas. It's fine. I'm fine." I gave the boy a reassuring side smile.
We were lying on his bed, shoulder to shoulder, our hands almost touching.
I had to admit that his bed was quite comfortable. And I liked the blue colour of his sheets. I had to convince myself that this was the only reason.
Hopefully the girls wouldn't notice that I wasn't there. And I really hoped Kiara was okay. Leaving her alone in that storeroom wasn't a good idea after all.
But getting drunk in the first place was the biggest mistake.
"What are you thinking about?"
Again Thomas's soft voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
I gotta stop zoning out.
Slowly, I moved my head so I was looking at him again. His eyes were on the ceiling this time.
His side profile was admirable. He looked young. Well, we were young. But right now he seemed vulnerable. I had to think back to what Drew said about a guard giving Thomas a hard time.
"Were you very young when they brought you here? Do you remember your parents?"
I watched his eyes turn a little sadder and immediately regretted asking the question.
"Yeah."
He was still staring at the ceiling.
I gave him time to answer and just waited patiently.
"My mum. I remember her. She was nice. Really nice. Especially to me." A long breath. "She took me here, said it would all be okay."
Oh. So he came here voluntarily.
"I can't remember much about my dad. He catched the flare. Went crazy on us. I think my mum got it too in the end."
"That sucks."
I nearly slapped myself. How heartless could I be?!
But to my surprise he let out a shaky laugh, eyes squinting.
"It does."
Satisfied, I went back to looking at the ceiling too.
"And were you young?"
"I guess. Six maybe."
I knew that Drew had told me that already but I forgot it.
"That is young."
A nod in the corner of my eye.
"And you?"
"I was ten."
Silence on the other side.
"Thomas." I whispered.
A hum to which I turned around.
His eyes were closed and his hand rested on his chest.
Why did people always end up falling asleep while I was talking. I didn't know if I should be offended or not.
Maybe my voice was just calming.
My eyelids began to get heavier as well. I watched his chest heave up and down until I decided to turn around to not be creepy.
Facing the wall, I pulled the sheets up to my chest and closed my eyes, knowing Thomas was right next to me.
And that was when I realised how understood and normal I felt around him.
I felt like he got me. Like he saw me. Not only the me that I showed others.
I also behaved differently when he was around. In a good way. Less mean as Kiara would have said.
Happy, perhaps.
Seeing him made this whole place suck less. I had to keep it that way. I couldn't let it get destroyed.

I woke up to a loud knock on the door. Knowing one of the others would answer it I didn't bother to open my eyes.
Getting up today wouldn't be fun. My bed was just too comfortable.
When I heard another knock I finally opened my eyes and almost flinched.
I wasn't alone. Thomas was lying next to me, sound asleep. And this wasn't my bed, it was his.
What had I gotten myself into?
Memories of last nights events came flooding back and I grimace.
Another knock. Now more impatient.
Shit. Why wasn't Thomas waking up? Who was that person knocking on the door?
I shook the boy's shoulder in order to wake him up and he slowly opened his eyes.
When he heard the noises from outside the door his confusion was soon replaced by realisation and he pulled me out of the bed.
"Who is that?" I whispered.
"They are bringing me breakfast and my schedule for today. Don't worry, just hide."
I nodded understanding and locked myself in the bedroom while Thomas walked towards the door.
I didn't like eavesdropping but the walls weren't very thick so I didn't have a choice.
"Good morning, Thomas."
The voice of a woman.
"Mrs. Paige."
"Did you sleep well?"
"Yeah."
My cheeks flushed a little.
"Good to hear. We have big plans for today. Phase one will soon be finished. Just know that I am very proud of Teresa and you."
A hum.
Maybe that was the doctor Thomas told me about. The nice one.
But what was phase one?
Probably some science crap I wouldn't even understand.
"Alright. Hurry up, Teresa and I are waiting for you in the lab."
Just as the door closed mine was being pushed open.
"Sorry bout that."
"No problem."
I smiled at him.
His eyes softened but he wasn't really smiling back.
"Well, hurry. Teresa and the woman are waiting for you in the lab." I widened my eyes in a playful manner to take the tension out of the situation.
He chuckled and nodded while facing the ground in front of me.
I walked past him and saw the bowl with breakfast on a grey tray next to his bed.
It smelled nice.
"Do you want some?"
"Nah, I'm good."
Thomas sat down on his bed and eyed the food.
I packed up my clothes from yesterday but stayed in his.
"You know you can eat right?"
And he started eating.
But right after the first spoon he began coughing mentioning at the hot food he just burned his tongue with.
He let out an embarrassed laugh as I tried to muffle my own.
"It's hot."
"I figured."
Still chuckling, I got up and walked to the door.
"I'll give you your clothes back some other time. Say hi to Teresa for me."
"Okay, I will. Bye, Charlie."
Oh my god.
No kiss, no nothingAnyway, hope you enjoyed ly xx
