There were a lot of questions—how they ended up abandoned, what happened to their parents—but I put them aside for another day. The priority now was getting them to our castle. At first, our horses didn't like the kid, but after calming them down, they let him climb on. The boy got onto Takashi's horse, and his kitsune sister accompanied me. She was so exhausted that she didn't even try to take her human form, remaining in her vixen form instead.Interestingly, the siblings had different fur colors. The boy had white-grey fur, not pure white like my mother. His sister, however, had fur that was completely pink. Not just a hint of pink, but entirely pink—a crazy color for a kitsune.
Soon after, she fell asleep in my arms while her brother dozed off against Takashi's chest. Takashi smiled a little, gently patting the boy's head.
"Idiot, acting all mighty but in the end, he's just a kid," he said softly.
I sighed, petting his sister's head. "Yashiro, once we get back, launch an investigation team to find out what happened to their parents."
"Understood, Young Master," Yashiro replied.
As we rode back, the weight of responsibility settled on me. These children had been through so much, and it was up to us to ensure their safety and uncover the truth behind their situation.***********
After we reached the city, we departed. Takashi and I headed back home. Once there, I met my mother and explained everything to her. What can I say... I couldn't even flinch. She bathed the children herself, treated their injuries, fed them, prepared a room for them, and let them sleep. After all of that, she grabbed her folding fan and started hitting my head.
"You stupid idiot... What were you thinking, setting a trap like that for a child? One mistake and you could've hurt him so badly."
"Hey, he started throwing spikes at us too... He could've hurt me as well," I replied.
"He did that because you idiots scared him!" She didn't stop for a moment.
Let me give you a tip about how to survive if your mother gets angry and starts hitting you. The tip is... do nothing. Even if you try to do something, it will get worse. Eventually, she will stop after you're unconscious or...
I braced myself, enduring the scolding. Finally, she stopped and sighed, placing her hands on her hips.
I could see stars circling around my head. I shook my head and regained my vision.
"So, what do you think, Mom?" I asked, because her expression bothered me.
"That boy... he's not a kitsune. His sister is, but not him."
"Come to think of it, I felt that too. Is he a dog? Like a Shiba Inu?"
"Shahasra... he is not a Shiba Inu or a fox. He is the rarest type of yokai I have ever seen. I thought they were only legends."
Why do I feel like a bombardment of information is incoming? I remained silent until she finished her sentence.
"He is a wolf... I have never seen one with my own eyes. I've lived for more than 900 years, and this is the first time I've seen someone like him."
"Is it bad?" I asked. Hey, don't blame me. I don't know what's happening either.
"A wolf... in Inazuma's ancient language, 'Okami.' They are the most powerful type of yokai, and they are incredibly rare. They are an evolved version of kitsune, but it's an exceptionally rare birth," she explained.
"I thought kitsunes were the most powerful yokai," I said.
"It's because wolves exist only in legends or something like that. He will become incredibly powerful, like my father. I think he will become the next king of yokai. I'm glad you found him before someone else did. Who knows what could happen if he fell into the wrong hands."
