Beth tossed and turned in her bed, her mind filled with anxiety over how to ask her mother for permission to spend the night at Ann's. Each idea she thought of seemed either too implausible or too complex. Nothing felt quite right; each excuse seemed more likely to raise questions than provide a smooth explanation.
After a restless night, Beth awoke early, her decision still hanging in the balance. She joined her mother in the formal dining room, where they often shared morning tea—a quiet time that Beth found best for discussing important matters.
Mother," Beth started, gathering her courage, "Ann has invited me to join her, Alice, and Belle for a small get-together at her place tonight. It's just a friendly girls' night—we plan to have some fun, play games, and maybe listen to some music. Can I stay over? We'll all be together, and I'll be back early tomorrow."
Her mother paused, considering her daughter's request, then nodded. "That sounds nice, Beth. It's good for you to spend time with your friends. And be sure to thank Ann for her hospitality."
Beth's face lit up with relief and excitement. "Of course, Mother. Thank you!"
"Alright then. Have a good time, dear," her mother replied with a smile.

Beth carefully carried the freshly baked cake, one she knew was Ann's favorite, up the grand steps of Aegon Mansion. The fragrance of vanilla and spices wafted from the box, a sweet indication of the surprise she had planned. As she reached the ornate front door, she adjusted her grip on the cake box and rang the bell.
The door swung open, revealing the Aegon family's maid. "Good afternoon, Miss Elizabeth. What brings you here today?" the maid inquired, stepping aside to let her in.
"I've made a cake for Ann. I thought I'd surprise her. Are Mr. and Mrs. Aegon at home?" Beth asked, peering into the expansive foyer that echoed slightly with the quiet of the afternoon.
"No, Miss. Mr. and Mrs. Aegon have traveled to a ceremony for a distant family friend. They will be away for two days. Miss Ann is in her office working," the maid explained, closing the door behind Beth.
"Could you please tell me where her office is? I'd like to surprise her," Beth said, her heart starting to beat a little faster with anticipation.
"Of course, Miss Beth. Follow me, please," the maid responded, leading Beth through the vast hallways adorned with portraits and luxurious furnishings that spoke of the Aegon family's long history and wealth.
They stopped in front of a large door at the end of a corridor. The maid gestured towards the door and said, "Miss Ann is inside. She hasn't requested not to be disturbed, so you may enter."
Beth thanked the maid and took a deep breath to steady her nerves. She knocked softly before entering, pushing the door open to reveal Ann seated at a large desk, papers and books spread around her, deeply focused on her work.
Ann looked up, surprise registering on her face, as she saw Beth standing there with a cake in her hands. "Beth! What a pleasant surprise." Ann's initial surprise quickly turned into a warm smile.
"I made you your favorite cake. I thought you might need a sweet break from all this work," Beth said, walking over to the desk and setting the cake down.
Ann's eyes lit up at the sight of the cake, and her smile deepened. "You're incredible, you know that?" she said, standing up and moving to clear a small space on her cluttered desk.
As they settled down to enjoy the cake, Beth watched Ann's face light up with each bite. She reached out, gently cradling Ann's face in her hands, her touch tender. She planted a soft kiss on Ann's forehead and then her nose, her actions conveying care and admiration.
