The dinner had just concluded, and the guests lingered over the last sips of their coffee and dessert, chatting amiably in the soft glow of the Munro dining room. Frank stood, clinking his glass gently to draw attention, his presence commanding the room to silence. The atmosphere was one of expectant curiosity, as all eyes turned towards him.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Frank began, his voice resonant and clear. "I have a very special announcement to make this evening." He paused, glancing towards Beth, who sat rigidly, her senses heightened with dread.
"Elizabeth and Jacob have agreed to solidify their acquaintance through an engagement. We are planning a small ceremony this weekend before the Jacob and his family returns to Holland." His words were measured, but the pride in his voice was evident.
The room erupted in a chorus of congratulations and clapping. Jacob's parents beamed with happiness, exchanging pleased looks and nods with Frank and Eleanor. Jacob himself managed a smile, glancing towards Beth to gauge her reaction.
Beth felt as if the ground beneath her had shifted. The announcement, though expected, still struck her with the force of a physical blow. Her heart raced, her face flushed with a mixture of embarrassment and panic. She tried to muster a smile, but it was a weak, fleeting thing, gone before anyone could truly see it.
As the applause continued, Beth felt her father's eyes on her, urging her to stand. With great effort, she rose to her feet, her legs barely supporting her. The room blurred into a swirl of colors and faces, all smiling, all celebrating a future she had not chosen.
"Thank you," she managed to whisper, her voice barely audible over the din of well-wishers. The words felt hollow, tasting of despair and resignation.
As the evening drew to a close, the reality of her situation settled like a cold stone in her stomach. She excused herself early, claiming fatigue, and retreated to the sanctuary of her room.
There, away from the eyes and ears of the family and guests, Beth allowed herself to crumble. The tears came then, hot and unrelenting, as she mourned the loss of her independence, the awaiting marriage not just to Jacob but to a life arranged by others. Her room, once a haven, now felt like a beautifully gilded cage.

The cool evening breeze swept across the terrace of the house Anne and Richard had rented during their stay in Germany. Anne stood leaning against the railing, her gaze fixed on the distant lights of the city, lost in thought.
Richard stepped onto the terrace and noticed the silhouette of his sister against the twilight sky. "Anne, I was thinking maybe we should go out for dinner and—" His words trailed off as he drew closer, noticing the shimmer of tears on Anne's cheeks.
"Anne, is everything okay? Why are you crying?" Richard's voice was laced with concern as he approached her.
Anne wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to compose herself. "It's nothing... just... I miss Beth so much." Her voice cracked as she spoke.
Richard moved closer, placing a comforting arm around her shoulders. "I know it's hard, Anne. Being away from someone you love is never easy," he said softly.
Anne leaned into his embrace, grateful for the support. "It's just that... I keep thinking about her, worrying about how she's doing. I feel so helpless being so far away. What if she needs me and I'm not there?" Her voice was filled with a mix of longing and worry, each word heavy with emotion.
Richard squeezed her shoulder gently, a gesture meant to reassure. "Beth is strong, and she has her family. But more importantly, she has your love, even from afar. And soon, you'll be back together, right?"
