Beth, scanning the room for a table, froze momentarily as her gaze landed on Ann. Their eyes met across the room; a palpable tension enveloped them both. The world around them faded into a blur, the chatter and clinking of cutlery becoming distant echoes. They were seeing each other after a long, aching week, and the intensity of their gaze conveyed a depth of emotion that words could never capture.
Beth's heart throbbed with a mixture of joy, pain, and longing. She had yearned for Ann more deeply than she had allowed herself to admit. Now, in Ann's presence, all her suppressed emotions surged to the surface.
Across the room, Ann's heart mirrored Beth's turmoil. A tumult of affection, confusion, and a sharp stab of curiosity about the young man with Beth, engulfed her. Her gaze, intense and searching, was laden with questions and a profound sense of longing.
Rest of the group sensed the weight of the moment. As they followed Ann's fixed stare and saw Beth. Noah glanced over and nudged Ann. "Oh, look, it's Beth! And who's that with her?" he asked with a hint of curiosity.
Richard leaned in, trying to get a better look. "I'm not sure. Never seen him before," he admitted, shrugging slightly.
Belle, with a playful twinkle in her eye, chimed in, "Wow, he's quite handsome, isn't he? Maybe we should invite them over." She gave a friendly wave in Beth's direction, catching her attention.
Beth, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension, noticed their gestures. As Belle motioned for her to join them, Beth felt a gentle nudge from Henry, encouraging her to go.
Taking a deep breath, Beth made her way towards the table, each step heavy with the weight of unspoken emotions and the longing she felt for Ann. Henry followed her with a smile.
As Henry gallantly pulled out a chair for Beth, his gesture didn't go unnoticed by Ann. She watched, a tumult of emotions brewing inside her. The simple act, innocent and courteous as it was, ignited a flicker of jealousy in Ann's heart. Her gaze, intense and unwavering, stayed locked on Beth, who sat nervously across from her.
Beth, under the weight of Ann's continuous stare, felt a nervous flutter in her heart. She found herself unable to meet Ann's gaze, her eyes nervously darting down to her hands folded in her lap.
Belle turned to Beth with a friendly smile. "Beth, why don't you introduce us to your friend here?"
Beth, gathering her composure, introduced Henry to the group. "Everyone, this is Henry. Henry is an old family friend who's visiting for a few days," she explained, her voice laced with an effort to maintain normalcy. "Henry, these are Noah and Belle, good friends of mine. "And this," she gestured towards Richard and Ann, "is Richard, and Ann, our neighbors and also dear friends of the family." Her voice was steady, but the undercurrents of emotion were palpable.
The group acknowledged Henry with polite nods and smiles. However, Ann's reaction remained reserved, her nod cool and distant. The knowledge of Henry's closeness to Beth, however insignificant in reality, stoked a silent flame of jealousy in her.

The lunch was served, the clinking of cutlery and the aroma of the dishes was filling the air. Ann, however, seemed hardly aware of the meal before her. Her gaze, sharp and intense, was fixed on Beth, her jealousy thinly veiled behind a façade of sarcastic curiosity.
"So, Beth," Ann began, her voice laced with a sharpness uncharacteristic of her usual warmth. "I haven't seen you around much lately. Busy with new friends?" The question, direct and pointed, hung heavily in the air.
Beth, caught off guard, felt a knot of nervousness tighten in her stomach. "Um, no, not really. Just the usual," she stammered, avoiding Ann's piercing gaze.
Ann's eyes didn't waver, "Really? Because it seems like you've had plenty of company lately." Her tone was casual, but the underlying accusation was clear.
Richard, sensing the tension, tried to steer the conversation to lighter shores. "Henry, tell us more about your plans in London. Beth says you're here for a short visit?"
Henry, oblivious to the undercurrents, launched into a description of his plans. However, Ann's attention remained focused on Beth, her questions like arrows striking with precision, revealing her turmoil and unspoken accusations.
Ann, with a hint of sarcasm, continued her interrogation, her eyes locked on Beth. "So, Beth, I've noticed you've been quite occupied lately. Is it all about showing our new friend here around, or is there more?"
Beth, feeling the intensity of Ann's gaze, fumbled for words. "It's just... Henry's visit. Nothing more," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ann leaned in, her voice dripping with mock innocence, "And here I thought you were too busy to spend time with old friends. Seems you've found quite a bit of time for Henry, though."
Richard, attempting to defuse the tension, interjected with a chuckle, "Annie, you're sounding like an overprotective sibling!"
Ann ignored Richard's comment, her focus unwavering. "I'm just curious, Beth. After all, friends care about each other's lives, don't they?"
Beth, increasingly uncomfortable, nodded silently, her discomfort evident. The tension at the table was palpable, with Richard and the others exchanging uneasy glances, unsure how to navigate the choppy emotional waters Ann had stirred.
Beth, trying to steer away from Ann's pointed questions, added, "And there's been the preparations for my father's birthday. It's been quite busy at home."
Richard, sensing Beth's growing discomfort, jumped in with a light-hearted comment, "Well, Annie, we all know how grand the Munroe celebrations can be. Beth's probably been running around like a headless chicken!"
Beth forced a small laugh at Richard's attempt to lighten the mood. But Ann, her jealousy barely contained, pressed on with her questioning, her eyes still fixed intently on Beth. "I'm just curious, Beth. With all the birthday preparations and your time with Henry, have you found any moment for yourself? Or is your schedule always this packed?"
Beth, feeling cornered, replied hesitantly, "I... I try to manage my time. It's just been a busy week, that's all."
Noah attempted to redirect the conversation with a more light-hearted topic. "Speaking of the birthday party, I'm looking forward to the cake, Beth. I heard it's going be really special."
Belle chimed in, "I'm also looking forward to the party, Beth. With all the preparations you've been making, I hope everything goes smoothly and just as you've planned."
Beth offered a grateful smile to Noah and Belle, appreciating their efforts to lighten the mood. "Yes, the cake should be something special this year. And I'll try my best to make you guys enjoy yourself to the fullest," she said, her voice regaining some of its usual warmth.
Ann, however, was not easily swayed. She added, with a hint of irony, "It's impressive, Beth, balancing party planning and hosting out-of-town guests. You must teach me your time management skills someday."
Richard, sitting beside Ann, leaned slightly towards her, away from the group's notice, and mouthed quietly, "What's wrong with you?" His expression showed a mix of concern and confusion.
Ann, caught momentarily off guard by Richard's silent question, offered no immediate response. Instead, she shifted her gaze back to the group, her expression composed but the storm of emotions still evident in her eyes.
