After their heartfelt conversation, Ann and Beth lingered in the kitchen, still wrapped up in the warmth of their shared confessions. The soft music continued to play, providing a gentle background to their quiet exchanges. Ann stood with her arms around Beth, who rested her head against Ann's shoulder. They spoke in hushed tones, each word infused with affection.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway. Before either of them could react, the kitchen door swung open, revealing Richard standing there, an expression of mild surprise quickly shifting to amusement on his face.
Both Ann and Beth jumped apart. Beth's face flushed deep red; her eyes wide with panic.
Richard raised his hands, a smirk playing on his lips as he pretended to cover his eyes. "Oh, sorry, did I interrupt something?" His tone was teasing, but his eyes were sharp, missing nothing.
Beth, utterly mortified and fearing the worst, stammered out a nervous response. "No, it's not what it looks like, we were just—"
Ann, though shocked, maintained a calmer demeanor, quickly stepping in. "Richie, it's okay. Let's just talk."
Richard's smile broadened as he stepped fully into the kitchen, closing the door behind him. "I know, Annie," he said, his voice teasing. "I might not always show it, but I'm not blind to the way you two look at each other."
Both women paused, processing his words. Ann looked at Richard, her expression softening. "You... you know?"
"I've had my suspicions," Richard admitted, leaning against the doorframe as he grinned. "But seeing you two just now, it's clear. I mean it's written all over your face, Annie, every time you look at her."
Beth's panic began to subside as she listened to Richard, though her heart still raced with a mix of fear and relief.
Ann breathed a deep sigh, her initial shock giving way to gratitude. She glanced at Beth, squeezing her hand in reassurance. "See? It's going to be okay."
"Alright, I actually just came down because I was hoping to find something to snack on," Richard admitted, glancing around the seemingly deserted kitchen with a raised eyebrow. "But I see no servants around, and now I understand why."
Ann chuckled, appreciating her brother's light-hearted approach to smoothing over any lingering tension. Beth, now much more at ease and grateful for Richard's acceptance, smiled warmly at him.
Richard grinned, heading towards the refrigerator. "Well, I'll leave you two lovebirds alone then. Enjoy your evening," he teased, winking at them before opening the fridge to rummage around for something to eat.
"Thanks, Richie. Really," Ann called after him, her voice filled with genuine appreciation.
With a final chuckle and a casual wave over his shoulder, Richard found a quick snack and exited the kitchen, leaving Ann and Beth alone once more.
As the door clicked shut behind him, Ann turned back to Beth, her eyes sparkling with happiness and relief. "Now, where were we?" she asked, pulling Beth into her arms again. She brushed a strand of hair from Beth's face. "Ah, right, we were about to have a perfect evening together."
Beth, still a bit shaken but comforted by Ann's reassurance, returned her smile and nodded. "Yes, let's not let anything spoil that."
Ann laughed softly, "Absolutely nothing will spoil our night. Would you like to go upstairs? I think we could be even more comfortable in my room. We could have more privacy there, just the two of us."
Beth nodded, "I'd like that."
Ann extended her hand, which Beth took without hesitation. Together, they walked hand in hand towards the staircase leading to Ann's room.
