In the refined ambiance of the Munro Mansion, Richard approached with a mix of anxiety and duty. He found Finn and Eleanor in the expansive living room; the air filled with the subtle scent of fresh flowers.
Richard greeted them both as he entered, his voice carrying a rehearsed cheerfulness. "I wanted to congratulate you both on Beth's marriage. It's a shame I couldn't be there."
Finn, with a practiced smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, nodded. "Thank you, Richard. It was all quite sudden, indeed. Beth and Jacob were just so eager. Initially, we thought to wait until Jacob returned from Holland, but those two were insistent on moving things forward. Young love, you know?" His tone was light, but there was an edge to his words that hinted at the layers of unspoken truths beneath.
Eleanor chimed in, her voice soft yet firm, "They were quite the pair, so deeply in love. It was touching to see them so devoted to each other. It's a good match, and we're very happy for them."
Richard nodded, masking his inner turmoil with practiced ease. "That's wonderful. They must be thrilled. I was hoping to visit and congratulate them in person as I have a client in Holland that I'd be visiting soon. Could you share their new address?"
Finn's expression tightened slightly but he maintained his cordial tone. "Of course, I understand. It's good of you to want to visit them. Let me get you that address."
"Here you go," Finn handed him a piece of paper with the address. "They will be glad to see you."
After a cup of tea and some chatter, Richard stood, ready to leave the Monroe Mansion. Finn followed him out, a sealed letter in his hand.
"Hey, Richard," Finn called out, his voice casual but with an undercurrent of tension. "Beth asked me to give this to Ann." He handed Richard the letter. "She wrote it on that new typewriter Jacob got her. She's been all over that thing since he brought it home."
Richard's expression tightened slightly as he took the letter. "She seems to have really taken to that typewriter," Richard commented, tinge of pain in his words.
Finn nodded, a forced smile on his face. "Oh, absolutely. She's been writing non-stop. You know Beth and her love for literature. It's given her a whole new way to express herself."
Richard nodded, feeling a strange hollowness at the mention of Beth's apparent happiness. "Seems like Beth was quite eager for the wedding, huh?"
Finn laughed, a bit too quickly. "Yeah, you could say that. We wanted to wait until Jacob returned from Holland, but Beth... she was persistent. She wanted it before he left. She was just so in love, and when Beth sets her mind on something, well, we just had to go with it."
Richard's heart felt a pang of sadness, masked by a polite smile. "Sounds like she was really swept off her feet. I'm happy for her. It's just a shame we missed the wedding."
Finn laughed, a hollow sound. "Love can't wait, I guess. Beth and Jacob were just too eager. We thought it's best to let them have their way."
Richard's smile faltered for a moment, thinking of Ann's reaction to all this. "I'll make sure Annie gets this letter. She'll be glad to hear from Beth, especially with all the changes."
Finn clapped Richard on the shoulder. "Will do, Richard. Take care, and let Ann know we missed her around here."
As Richard walked to his car, the letter next to him, he couldn't shake the feeling of concern that settled over him. He knew the next conversation with Ann would be one of the hardest he'd ever had. The thought of breaking her heart was almost too much to bear, but he knew he had to be there for her, now more than ever.
