Ann awoke, the memory of last night's almost-kiss with Elizabeth still vivid in her mind. The sensation lingered, a mix of yearning and confusion swirling within her. She lay in bed for a moment longer, trying to shake off the dreamlike quality of the memory, but it clung to her like a second skin.

Dragging herself out of bed, Ann descended the staircase to the breakfast room, still lost in thought. Her mother, Martha, was already there, looking a bit pale but trying to keep up her spirits.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Martha greeted her. "I hope you slept well."

Ann offered a distracted smile, "Morning, Mother. Yes, I... I slept alright."

Martha sighed, a look of regret crossing her face. "I have something to ask of you, dear. Your cousin Olivia's wedding is tomorrow, and I'm just not feeling up to the journey. Could you and Richard go in my place?"

Ann's heart sank. The last thing she wanted was to leave now, with so many unresolved feelings about Elizabeth. "But, Mother, I..." she started to protest.

Before she could finish, Richard walked in, his usual jovial self. "Do I hear wedding? Who's getting married?"

Ann shot him a look, her frustration evident. "It's Olivia's wedding. Mother wants us to go."

Richard raised an eyebrow, grinning. "Come on, Annie. Think about it! The food, the music, the dancing! And you, getting out of this suffocating castle for a bit."

"I don't know, Richard..." Ann hesitated, her thoughts still on Elizabeth.

Seeing her reluctance, Martha added softly, "I really wish I could go, Ann. But I'm not feeling well. It would mean a lot to me."

Richard playfully nudged Ann. "Plus, I need my favorite sister there. Who else will save me from the clutches of boring relatives and their never-ending questions about when am I getting married?"

Ann couldn't help but smile at Richard's antics. His light-heartedness was infectious, even in her current state of mind.

"Alright, fine. I'll go," Ann conceded, though her heart wasn't in it.

"That's the spirit!" Richard exclaimed. "And who knows, maybe you'll find some distraction from whatever's got you so distracted here."

Ann rolled her eyes but appreciated her brother's attempt to cheer her up. She knew she had no choice but to go, but her thoughts remained with Elizabeth, wondering how she would cope with the distance, even if just for a few days.

On the day of departure, Ann dressed thoughtfully for the journey to Bath, a city celebrated for its historic Roman baths and exquisite Georgian architecture. She chose a simple yet elegant gown, the fabric a soft blue that complemented her fair complexion. Her black hair, usually falling freely to her shoulders, was tied back in a practical yet graceful updo, revealing the gentle contours of her face.

As Ann packed her bags, her heart weighed heavy with thoughts of Elizabeth. "Three whole days away from her... How am I going to manage this? Will she think of me as I will of her?" she pondered, her reflection in the mirror looking back at her with a mix of apprehension and longing.

--------------

The journey to Bath was a significant distance from their Shropshire home. The carriage ride, lasting a good few hours, took them through picturesque landscapes and quaint villages, but Ann's thoughts were elsewhere, fixated on Elizabeth.

Upon reaching Bath, Ann was greeted by the lively atmosphere of wedding preparations at her uncle Martin's grand house. The house, a splendid example of Bath's famed architecture, buzzed with activity. Servants scurried about, and decorations adorned every corner.
