After a long and exhausting flight, Ann and Richard finally landed back in England, two days after Beth's marriage. The weight of their luggage was nothing compared to the eagerness in Ann's heart. She was enthusiastic to see Beth, to tell her all about how much she missed her, and to finally feel her close again.

The drive to the mansion was filled with light conversation, Richard teasing Ann about the amount of stuff she'd bought for Beth. "You know, Munroes might mistake you for moving in, not just visiting to meet Beth," he joked, trying to lighten the mood.

Ann smiled, but her mind was elsewhere. "I just hope she likes everything. I've missed her so much."

As they approached Aegon mansion, their parents were waiting outside, their faces breaking into broad smiles upon seeing their children. The reunion was filled with hugs and laughter, their mother fussing over them, commenting on how thin they looked, and their father proudly clapping Richard on the back.

"Come inside, you two. You must be tired," their mother said, leading them into the house.

Ann made her way to her room after excusing herself almost immediately as she entered the mansion. Her mind was a mix of exhaustion from the journey and excitement to see Beth. She planned to freshen up quickly and then surprise her love with all the gifts she had brought back.

Meanwhile, downstairs, Richard sat with his parents, Martha and James, in the living room. The array of luggage Ann had brought back was a topic of light-hearted conversation.

"Oh, my goodness, is all this luggage Ann's?" Martha exclaimed, signaling the maid to carry it inside.

Richard laughed, shaking his head. "More than half of that is for Beth. Annie has been shopping for her like there's no tomorrow. You'd think she was trying to buy the whole of Germany for her."

"It would have been great if Ann could have given these to Beth herself," Martha said wistfully.

Richard, still in a light-hearted mood, was confused. "What do you mean?"

"Beth just got married on the 9th," Martha said with a smile.

Richard, stunned, nearly dropped his cup. "Married? Mom, what are you talking about?" His voice was a mixture of confusion and disbelief.

Martha nodded, her tone light but surprised by Richard's reaction. "Yes, I know things moved rather quickly, but that's how it turned out. They had to make quick decisions because Jacob had to return to Holland."

Richard pressed, his mind racing, "But how? When we left for Germany, there was nothing like that. It's only been a month!" The reality was too abrupt, too shaking.

Martha smiled, mistaking his shock for simple surprise. "Well, love works in mysterious ways, doesn't it? Jacob had to be back in Holland by the 10th, so they decided to marry before that. It all happened so fast, but they looked wonderful together."

Richard felt a chill run down his spine. "So, she's not even here? She's in Holland?" The words were heavy, laden with a mix of fear and sorrow.

"Yes, they flew out yesterday," Martha confirmed, her voice still cheerful. "Beth and her husband are starting their new life together in Holland."

Just then, Ann bounded down the stairs with a large bag filled with carefully selected gifts, her face lit up with excitement. She was eager to head over to the Munros and share the tokens of love she had brought back for Beth.

"Mom, Dad, I'm heading out to the Munroes. I am going to meet Beth," Ann announced, her voice bubbling with joy.

Martha looked up from her tea, a smile spreading across her face. "Oh, darling, you might have to wait a bit longer to give those to her," she said softly.
