The day was wearing on, each moment stretching like an eternity for Beth. Beth remained in her room, her thoughts intense and her heart heavy with anxiety. When the maid entered with her lunch, Beth saw an opportunity, a faint glimmer of hope in the suffocating darkness of her circumstances.

She waited until the maid had set the tray down before speaking, her voice low and urgent. "I need your help," Beth said, her eyes scanning the maid's face for any sign of hesitation.

The maid looked at Beth with a mix of concern and curiosity. "Of course, Miss Elizabeth. How can I assist you?" she replied, her tone respectful yet warm.

Beth took a deep breath, her hands trembling as she held out the sealed letter. "I need you to post this letter for me. It's very important that it reaches its destination as soon as possible," she requested, her gaze intense and pleading.

The maid's eyes widened slightly at the request, but she nodded, understanding the importance of the situation. "I will, Miss Elizabeth. You can trust me," she assured her.

To sweeten her request and show her gratitude, Beth removed her earrings — a beautiful pair of simple, yet elegant, silver studs. She held them out to the maid. "Please, take these as a token of my appreciation. But more importantly, you must be very careful. Don't let anyone know about this letter," Beth added.

The maid accepted the earrings and the letter. "I promise, Miss Elizabeth. Your secret is safe with me," she vowed.

After the maid had left with the letter, she made her way toward the front of the mansion, her heart racing with the weight of the secret she carried. She was just turning down the corridor when Finn stepped out in front of her.

"Mr. Finn," she said, a note of surprise in her voice as she stopped short.

"What are you doing here?" Finn asked, his eyes narrowing slightly as he observed her. "And what are you doing at this hour?"

The maid stuttered, caught off guard by the sudden interrogation. "I-I just served lunch to Miss Elizabeth. Now I'm off to the kitchen to... to run some errands," she managed to say, hoping her nervousness wasn't too apparent.

Finn stepped closer; his gaze sharp. "Kitchen is that way." He signaled. "And what are you hiding in your hand?" he demanded, his voice stern and commanding.

"It's nothing, sir, just..." she trailed off, her mind racing for an explanation.

"Show it to me. Now," Finn insisted, extending his hand.

With a heavy heart and a trembling hand, the maid handed over the letter. Finn's eyes quickly scanned the contents, his expression turning from suspicion to anger as he read.

"You will go back to Beth and tell her that you've posted this letter. Understand?" Finn said coldly, the letter crumpled in his fist. "And remember, if you breathe a word of this to anyone, especially Beth, you'll be out of a job before you can blink."

The maid nodded, fear evident in her eyes. "Yes, sir. I'll do as you say," she promised, her voice barely above a whisper.

Finn watched her go, the letter now a powerful leverage in his hands. He had plans for this information, plans that would ensure Beth remained under their control. As for the maid, she returned to Beth and lied about posting the letter, her heart heavy with the guilt of betrayal.

Finn's footsteps echoed down the hall as he made his way to his father's office. The letter he had intercepted weighed heavily in his pocket, each step a reminder of the secret it held and the potential chaos it represented for their family. Reaching the door, he knocked firmly before entering, finding his father, Frank, seated behind a large, imposing desk.
