YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL
a caller | chapter three“is that a new sheet?”
IT HAD BEEN A SLEEPLESS NIGHT FOR CLARISSA. Being in such a large house, alone, at night had taken away most of the beauty she had seen in it before. She laid in her bed, feeling as if she had much more space than she realistically needed and still feeling bitter about Rupert’s unannounced exit, without her, from Lady Danbury’s party. She was sure when she’d been taking another stroll through the manor before bed that she had heard noises from inside the Earl’s bed chambers, but there were no words she could make out.
Really, her only conclusion she could come to was that she had to give up on having a somewhat civil relationship with her husband. And that is why she sat at breakfast with no expectation of seeing him for at least a couple days, reading a pamphlet that she had paid for at the door of their home. It was labelled as Lady Whistledown and it had been quite informative about the ton, and had even mentioned her own name. She seemed to be a mystery to even this Lady Whistledown woman as all that was said was she was the new Countess Townsend from America. Clarissa would be lying if that didn’t boost her ego even a little bit.
Breakfast consisted of hot, butter bread rolls, all the fruit Clarissa could have asked for and what seemed to be gallons of tea. Clarissa had attempted to enjoy the tea she was given, but it had an odd taste and she was unsure it agreed with her. The rest of breakfast had been delicious and she had even told Aliah to tell the cooks the same, however, Ms. Thorpe didn’t seem to approve of that decision as she gave her another strict look.
