CLARISSA SCANNED HER EYES AVIDLY over the lines of the newest Lady Whistledown sheet, a specific two sentences standing out to her. ‘It seems that Countess Clarissa Townsend has found a friend in the second eldest Bridgerton daughter, Eloise. We shall have to wait and see if the rebellious nature of the Americans finds itself as contagious as the Queen claims it to be.’ Really, she shouldn’t be surprised that she had been mentioned again because, as Rupert had said, they were an Earl and Countess and people shall talk. She also wasn’t entirely surprised at the mention of her new friendship with Eloise since from the other such stuff she had written, Lady Whistledown had the ability to even make the simplest of things sound like a scandal.
Yet, seeing her own and Eloise’s names, together, on a page as if it was a scandal for them to talk to one another was a little unnerving to Clarissa. She didn’t even seem phased by the comment of her whereabouts, only staring at the words of ‘Clarissa’ and ‘Eloise’. Their names together should not cause her heart to come aflutter like it had, but Clarissa couldn’t help herself. Such a normal thing to be written, two names, but Clarissa felt as if she’d been uncovered somehow.
