YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL
dare say friends | chapter thirteen“i impeded. i see.”
CLARISSA HAD TO ADMIT SHE HAD BEEN acting a little colder towards Rupert since that afternoon, and that was especially apparent as they were in the carriage heading to Batson House for the ball that evening. She fidgeted with her gloves to try and avoid making conversation with her husband, but she knew she would have to at some point. She had been the one to make him come to the event, after all. He was even in one of his more expensive and luxurious suits. That had been his idea, though, so Clarissa did not take the blame for that.
Rupert had realised the tension that had gotten a little thicker between them, but he couldn’t place what he had done this time. Of course, he knew there was going to be tension because of him gaining her trust, but this was stronger than it had been that very morning. He had pinpointed the start of the cold shoulder around the time Eloise had visited the house, but he could not figure out what he had done in that time to cause such a sudden change in her mood. He was determined to work it out, though.
“I believe the Queen will be attending this ball,” he told her, having asked Patrick to gain some intel from his sources – he had learnt over the years that the extent of gossip between house staff was vast. Clarissa did not meet his eye, but he kept up his cheerful disposition. “As will her nephew, so I gather. Prince Friedrich of Prussia.”
