YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL
unbridled rage | chapter ten"apologies for the disturbance"
CLARISSA HAD FINISHED ELOISE'S PORTRAIT in under five hours, which she thought was quite good time considering this was to be her first completed painting. Eloise had - quite literally - fought to see it once she had announced it was done, but Clarissa covered it with a sheet before she could, claiming that she would send it over once she could frame it. Eloise had pouted, but accepted. Since the time was rather late when they had finished, Clarissa insisted that Eloise stay for dinner too. She promised to send a messenger to Lady Bridgerton to inform her of it. After that, Eloise agreed whole-heartedly.
Eloise had sat on her right at the dining table, and Clarissa much preferred it to Rupert's usual position at the opposite head of the table. Rupert did not join them for dinner that night, and Clarissa only invited Eloise because she expected as such - she would rather not force a more horrible scenario on the girl. Eloise had brought up Rupert's absence, but not as a question of why he wasn't there, instead commenting that she believed it better to be just the two of them. Clarissa could not agree with her more.
Unfortunately, the evening came to a close after dinner, and Clarissa knew Eloise must be getting home soon otherwise she may make an enemy of Lady Bridgerton. Before she left, Clarissa quickly took her to the manor's library, passing her a book she was sure she would take a fancy for. Eloise accepted it with no argument and even paused to hug her which had taken Clarissa by pleasant surprise. Then Eloise really did leave and Clarissa was sure she hadn't felt the full effect of the house's loneliness until that moment.
