“Well fine then!” you yelled slamming the screen door behind you. You jumped down the three stairs from your doorstep to the sidewalk and began making your way to the street. “Helene! Stop! Come on, where are you going?!” your boyfriend called from the doorway. “OUT.” You answered, not looking back at him. The two of you had been fighting all day for no good reason and you needed to get out of the house and clear your head. Luckily you only lived 5 minutes from the beach so you figured you could go for a swim and just relax a little bit. It was dusk and all of the lifeguards were off duty, and the only people at the beach were couples and old people taking walks. You crossed the boardwalk and immediately felt the coarse sand between your toes due to the fact that you weren’t wearing any shoes.

You forgot to bring a towel in your rush out of the house so you took off your shirt and shorts and left them on the sand, hoping they wouldn’t blow away. As you walked towards the water a light breeze sent goosebumps up your arm, making you shiver. You took your hair out of a bun and stepped slowly into the ocean. It was chilly but you didn’t care. All you wanted to do was dunk your head under and float. The strong waves splashed against your thighs as you got deeper into the water and began to swim out. You weren’t supposed to be swimming at night but you grew up at this beach and had done this before. When you had swum out far enough, you lay on your back and let the waves rock you into a peaceful state.  The only thing you could hear was them crashing at shore which was a distance from you. You closed your eyes and blocked the thoughts of your boyfriend from your head and just breathed. You didn’t really know how long you were out there when you opened your eyes to see that you were further out than you thought you’d be by now. It didn’t bother you as you began to swim back to shore, confident you could make it. You kept swimming but realized you weren’t getting any closer, and looking around you figured out that you were in the middle of a rip tide.

You tried your best to swim with the waves, but it seemed like you were being carried further and further out. Panic began to sink in and you screamed for help, hoping someone could see or hear you. Luckily, there was an elderly couple on the beach who heard you, and the man yelled to you that he would go and find some help. Your arms and legs were tired and you were shaking with fear, praying that someone would come fast. “Don’t worry dear!” the old woman yelled to you as loud as she could, “help is coming! Just keep treading water!”

Easier said than done. Your thighs burned with fatigue and it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep your head above water. Looking at the shore again you saw a boy running towards the water. “Hang in there I’m coming to help you!” he yelled. He wore red swimming trunks, a characteristic of beach lifeguards and had sandy blonde hair. Of all the people to see you drowning like an idiot, it would be a hot guy. Normally you would’ve complained, but at this point, all you wanted to do was touch the ground again. The blonde haired boy swam out to you quickly, reaching you in a matter of minutes. “Are you alright?” he said grabbing hold of you. You nodded and let out a sigh of relief, thankful that he had come in time. “Hold on to me and I’ll get you back.”

It was kind of fun to be hanging on to a hot, determined lifeguard as he swam back to shore. You could see the definition of his back muscles each time he pulled his arms out of the water and sunk them back in again. Eventually you reached shallow water and you went to walk when he picked you up and carried you onto the sand near the elderly couple. “Are you okay?” he asked a little breathlessly. You nodded. “Yeah I’m fine thank you so much!” The old man and his wife walked towards you smiling. “Good job Niall,” the old woman said reaching up and kissing him on the cheek, “we’re very proud of you! Oh, and are you alright dear? We were so worried when we saw you out there!” she said turning to you. “Yes, yes I’m okay. Just a little shaken up.” The boy laughed at little. “I’m Niall by the way. And these are my grandparents.” He smiled sweetly and looked around, waiting for you to introduce yourself. “Oh, oh I’m Helene,” you said. “Thank you again for going to get him I really appreciate it. And thank you for saving me..Niall.”
