The plane soars high as you head for Paris, fidgety and uncomfortable as you still struggle to search for your cell.

“I can’t believe this,” you groan, cupping your hand over your mouth. “I need my phone.”

“Ah, shush. I’ll just buy you another one.” Niall rolls his eyes, and you almost smack him.

“How will my parents call me? And Ariel? Liam? I have to call him back, actually,” and then you start to get anxious again. “He called me at 2 in the morning, he was probably drunk or something, I have to speak with hi—”

“Liam’s fuckin’ fine,” Niall cuts you off, bringing his voice down to a whisper. “Stop checking up on him all the time, he’s perfectly capable of taking care of himself.” And if looks could kill, Niall would be dead— because you were furious.

“Excuse me?” You snap at him, not even attempting to lower your tone of voice. “I’ve known Liam way longer than you have, so you can’t possibly tell me anything that will calm me down. I’m worried about him, okay? What the fuck do you even know, Niall?”

And Niall lets out an enormous sigh, letting you know that it was time for another big reveal.

“Liam, he’s…” Niall scans the passengers around you to make sure no one is really paying attention. “He’s a CIA kid.”

    Your mouth falls open.

“A… what?”

And Niall told you all he knew about Liam. He told you about Liam’s spy parents, and how they’d left England to work for America’s Central Intelligence Agency. Upon learning they were expecting a son, they took their lives back to a small town in England to let him lead a normal life while they often had to hide their lives of espionage from him. But his curiosity and love for photography led to a gruesome reveal when he’d come across some confidential film containing some petrifying visuals of many clandestine murders. Liam was only 9 at the time, but suddenly old enough to decide that he no longer wanted to live with his parents.

His parents reluctantly agreed to let him leave for his grandparents’ home in Ireland, where he was able to get away from the pressure of having to become a spy one day. His parents had explained to him the Spy Complex, in which kids of spies almost always join the business. But he did not want any part in it, and who could blame him? He’d lived his whole life thinking he had normal parents when really, they were living a lie. And he figured that if his grandparents could leave England for a calmer life in the midlands of Ireland, so could he.

Life in Ireland was great for Liam, he’d enrolled in an all-boys school, joined the rugby team, and made tons of great friends. One of those friends was Niall, a little blonde boy from Mullingar.

“We were pals for years,” Niall told you, his demeanor calm but somber. “Up until year 7. That’s when I realized he was just like me, with spy parents. He had some noticeable spy kid quirks about him, y’know? I could just tell. And I got all excited, askin’ him which department he planned to apply for and shit.”

“And?” Your eyes were wide with curiosity.

“And he told me he wasn’t interested.” He fidgeted in his seat as he tried to find the words to speak. “He told me that he’d left England because he didn’t want to be a part of it. He said he knew how spies were: liars, cheaters, thieves, and that he hated us. And the next week, I’d found out he moved to America with his grandparents.”

And that brought you back to the day you’d heard Liam nagging Niall before Harry’s party. I know how you guys are, Liam had snapped at Niall. He knew how spies were.
