Distractions (Harry)

It happened again today.

Not that that surprised me. Every Tuesday and Thursday we would dance the same dance.

It started the same way every class since the beginning of September. No matter how early I arrived to our classroom, he would already be there, leaning back easily in his chair on the far side of the room. Every day he looked gorgeous - usually in nothing more than dark jeans and a fitted, black shirt, which even as we were well into fall, accented his still sun-kissed skin. Every day I would try to not look at him, to appear as if his presence wasn’t important to me in the slightest. And every day I would fail miserably as my eyes would betray me, darting straight to his.

Our gazes would lock instantly, and it would always feel as if time would stop completely as our eyes remained rooted to each other’s, his green eyes burning intensely into my own. My heart would flutter in my chest and for those few seconds, it would seem as if the world around us had disappeared, falling into some unknown void, leaving just the two of us. The seconds would feel like hours as our eyes would remain fastened on each other’s, but I would always be the one to break the connection first.  Flushed and breathless, I would catch myself turning all too soon to walk to my usual seat, avoiding him all together for the rest of the hour and forty five minutes of lecture time.

But just because I wouldn’t dare take a second glance, didn’t mean he wasn’t on my mind. He was the best and worst distraction that I gained so far this semester. I was always thinking about him. I actually couldn’t stop thinking about him. He was constantly infiltrating my mind yet, we were teetering on the end of the semester and we’d never even spoken. He wasn’t necessarily making it easy on me either. He always seemed to be around, spinning through my surroundings without ever entering my own personal atmosphere.

Every day our ‘Sex in Literature’ class would meet, it was like this with him. Every day. The same routine.

Except today.

Today we were paired up by our professor and assigned the task of reading various sequences from erotic literature, to then analyze and write a response to such works. After Harry’s name and my own had been called out together in succession as a pairing, I barely comprehended anything for the rest of the lecture. My mind had been spinning with countless scenarios of how I would survive this, and I had trouble coming up with even one by the time class was dismissed.

I was sitting there in my seat, mulling over the situation, and it was only when I noticed the others in the room start to gather their belongings and disperse that I shook the fog induced cloud that my brain was becoming accustomed to and gathered my own things. However, when I looked up after swinging my bag on to my shoulder, I was startled to find Harry standing right in front of me. “Oh!” I grabbed my heart with my hand, trying and failing to steady it.

“I’m sorry,” he said with darkened eyes even though a crooked grin graced his face. While I had heard his voice countless times in class, it was the first time our words collided and his were nothing but slow, smooth and stronger than I could remember. A flush crept up my neck, as if those two simple words had burned my skin.

“No. um..it’s okay. It’s fine. Um…Hi?” I replied, sticking my hand out awkwardly to introduce myself.

After a stumbling introduction on my part, I looked up to see him still smiling at me, the heat of his stare igniting my blood, making my light blouse feel like a straight-jacket. “Well, I was wondering what you were doing later tonight? Maybe we could um…get started on our project?” he asked, a soft smile played across his soft pink lips.

“Uh yeah….sure. Tonight works,” I told him, tearing my eyes away from his mouth as I started to walk out into the hallway and then outside, desperately searching for some much needed fresh air. I could feel the electric of his stare the entire time, as he followed close behind.
