I coughed as I walked into the shady, hole-in-a-wall tattoo shop. The air was thick with smoke and it smelled as though it hadn’t ever been cleaned. There was no one at the front desk when I walked up so I yelled out, “Excuse me!” There was no answer and I was about to leave when a voice yelled from the back, “I’ll be right out!” I looked around for somewhere to sit that wasn’t covered in an unidentified grime. I cleared a couple magazines off a small table and perched on top of it.

I had no idea what I was doing there. Actually, yes, I did. Todd owned the only other shop in town and I was not about to go to him for this tattoo. Not a chance. I mean, he gave me the one I was trying to cover up. I was looking around taking in my surroundings when I heard a chorus of laughter. Four boys came through the door that probably led to the back of the shop. They were all smoking cigarettes which was probably why the air was so smoky. I stood up and they stopped laughing when they noticed they weren’t alone. “Which one of you is going to help me?” I asked crossing my arms over my chest. A gorgeous blonde boy with a cigarette in his mouth and bright blue eyes stepped forward from behind his friends.

“That would be me, Love. I’m Niall.” I shook his outstretched hand, “Rose.” “Well, Rose, what can I do for you today?” “I need a tattoo covered up.” “Drunken mistake?” He asked. I laughed, “Something like that.” “Okay, follow me.” He led me through a door on our right and into a room that only had a tattoo chair, folding chair, and table with an ink gun and other things on it. I laughed to myself, classy place. “What do you need covered up?” He asked, sitting on the folding chair. I took my shirt off and turned around for him to see. “Who’s Todd?”

“A mistake that I’d like covered up.” “Ex-boyfriend?” I nodded and sat on the other chair with my back facing him. “Is there anything specific you want?” I heard some clanging and figured he was setting up his tools. I thought about it before I came but actually had no idea what I wanted. Really I just wanted something to show I wasn’t anyone’s property. “I don’t want to be tied down,” I whispered so quietly I don’t think he heard me, “Um, surprise me.”

He didn’t say anything else until he was done. It took a couple hours and I was really anxious to see what it looked like. He handed me a mirror and I walked up to the one that was hanging on the wall. I was pleasantly surprised with the result. It was beautiful. “I figured birds would be perfect for someone who doesn’t want to be tied down,” he explained coming out of nowhere to stand behind me in the mirror. I guess he had heard me. “Thank you, it’s amazing.” “It was no problem.” We walked to the front and I paid him for the cover up. His friends came back through the door when he was handing me my credit card back, still laughing. “Ey, Niall, we’re going to the pub are you in?” A short boy with bright orange hair asked. “Hell yeah,” he turned to me, “you want to come with Rose?” I was a little taken aback. We had just met and he didn’t know me at all and neither did I. I didn’t think it was a good idea and surprised myself by saying, “Sure.”

-The pub we went to was another hole-in-the-wall and apparently the boys went there often. When we walked in, the bartender greeted them with cheers and a free round of drinks for all of us. I don’t think there was a time that night that I didn’t have a drink in my hand and that made for a very tipsy Rose. “EY, NIALL!” I yelled from probably three meters away. He laughed at me, “Yes, love?” “Why aren’t you drunk?” I said a little quieter. “Because I’m not a lightweight like you,” he teased. I gasped, pretending to be offended, “I am NOT a lightweight, you just need to drink more.”
