"Ezra?" Annie asked. He appeared by her side in an instant.
"Yes?" he asked, and she nodded to the chair in front of her. He gave her a small smile and pulled out another letter.
Just like he told Finnick and Amara he would, Ezra stopped by every day to see Annie and read her another one of Adrien's letters.
"Will you tell me something good?" she asked. It was a habit they picked up before each reading. Before and after the pain of the letter, Ezra would tell her something good that was happening because of the rebellion. Something good that Adrien fought for, and it made his death mean more than any other death. He fought for a better world, and while Annie couldn't leave her room just yet, she got all her information from him.
"They finished rounding up the criminals that assisted Snow today," Ezra said. "The gamemakers, the peacekeepers, anyone involved in torture..."
"So Amara's parents?" Annie asked. Ezra nodded.
"They were arrested the day before we found out you were pregnant," Ezra said. "Finnick has been trying to convince her to go visit."
"I doubt that has gone well," Annie said. Ezra shook his head.
"Not at all," he admitted. She nodded, accepting his answer, and then she pointed at the envelope in his hands.
Dear Annie,
I saw a rose today and it made me think of you. I know that roses have always traditionally been the symbol of Finnick and Amara's love story, but Finnick's obsession with his rose led me to your shop that day all those years ago when you convinced me to try and ask you to go fishing again.
You've always been braver than I have, and it is a bravery I could use right now. We've been filming these propos for days, and I'll admit that I'm terrified every time we approach a new one. I keep reminding myself that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph of it. So, I continue forward each day knowing that each step will bring my closer to you.
One day, all these propos, all this death, and this whole war will mean something far greater than we could ever imagine. It will mean that we will be able to tell our children that we fought for the freedom of the country. We will get to tell them about how the world used to be while raising them in the society we so desperately want. I cannot wait to see that day because it will mean I get to fall asleep in your arms without fear of ever being taken from you again.
I love you so much.
Adrien
Annie was crying and caressing her stomach when Ezra put the letter down. He didn't say anything as she wrapped her arms around her torso like she was trying to hug her baby.
"I don't want to do this alone," she wheezed, and Ezra crouched down by her side.
"You won't," he promised. "We're going to be here every step of the day. You'll have me, Jade, Finnick, Amara, and all the other victors. We're going to be there to help you raise this baby and make sure that he knows Adrien's love."
